As animation, it's substandard, primitive dreck; as comedy, however, it's gloriously subversive art. [12 Aug 1997]

It is at once insanely juvenile and very sophisticated, appealing to a funny bone that, as an adult, I try to hide. I feel guilty about laughing, but I laugh anyway. [13 Aug 1997]

Although influenced by adult cartoons as Simpsons, South Park's proposal is even more bold. Humor of the most acid and cruel, scatological and at the same time genial moments, the most well elaborated clever scripts and metaphors to report and criticize all hypocrisy and fails in society. Animation technical were different of everything ever seen (paper cutting and stop motion) despite simple and even rough in series' beginning (with the same background for almost everything), being enhanced with the time, but not losing series rawness characteristic. One the most genial not only cartoon but TV series of all time.

This show is the funniest and craziest show on television. Every character is interesting and funny too. The humor is very very black and yes sometimes the humor is a little bit weirdo. But south park is still amazing. Trey Park and Matt Stone are inspirations.

Unlike many cartoons, this one actually looks funny, and it constantly plays on its grade-school aesthetic for shock value, with great success. At its best, "South Park" is more a profane "Peanuts" than a downsized "Beavis and Butt-head." [13 Aug 1997]

The important thing about "South Park" is not what it looks like or the way the characters talk, but what they say. It's a writer-driven vehicle, like most of the better twisted adult cartoons. [13 Aug 1997]

For now, at least, the satirical elements aren't as sharp as other popular cartoons like "The Simpsons" or "King of the Hill" or even "Beavis & Butt-Head." [13 Aug 1997]

To say that the series is not for everyone is lavish understatement. The real question: Is it for anyone? [13 Aug 1997]

It's dismissible juvenilia ... a collection of poorly paced, lowest-common-denominator setups that are not even sophomorically funny or scatologically goofy. [13 Aug 1997]

It''s an interesting first season with perfect episodes and not so perfect ones, so a mixed bag at the end of the day. Highlights were the Halloween episode as well as the Volcano one. The most disapointing story was the Big Gay Al ep. Overall though, while the quality was up and down, there were still more better stories than worse.

The first season had some funny moments overall and one or two really good episodes but other than that, it was just okay.

South Park revolves around the exploits of in and around the titular Colorado town. I have no problem with comedy shows that push the boundaries of decency, and have often found myself laughing at shows like It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia or Family Guy. Personally however I never really found South Park’s particular brand of crude humour to be particularly funny during this first season, and so despite the show’s continued popularity I’ve never felt the urge to tune back in.
