It is a masterpiece. A gleeful, radical shake-up of period drama that repositions history, sexuality and class with the wink of an eye and poke of a cane.

Not everything about the series works ... But certainly watch Gentleman Jack. Watch it for an interesting depiction of 19th-century Yorkshire society ... Watch it for Jones’ forceful, vivacious, smart-as-hell portrayal.

Brilliant! Moving, funny, transgressive! Suranne Jones is magnificent as Ann Lister, she and Sophie Rundle as Anne Walker bring a depth and vibrancy to their characters that is a rare treat. Sally Wainwright has delivered a masterpeice. I am blown away by the script, acting, and story.

Wonderful acting that depicts the period so well. Our family all agree, it's the best series on TV right now

The show has lost none of its brilliance, nor has Wainwright dislodged its heart and soul – she has only added to it. Gentleman Jack remains a bold and transgressive figure not just for a period drama, but mainstream TV in general, and season 2 another emotional ride.

Between Wainwright’s crisp, fair-minded scripts and star Suranne Jones’ flawless performance, it’s tempting to believe that Anne Lister was the most fascinating person of the 19th century.

Gentleman Jack seemed intent on boring [viewers] to death. I like this show but, for the love of God, if I have to hear another word about railway shares or double canal locks or the Navigation Acts I will slip into a coma. How Suranne Jones remembers all these tedious lines and delivers them perfectly is a miracle. She could, though, do with dialling down the redoubtable marching, the gurning and the brusque checking of her pocket watch, because Anne Lister is in danger of caricature.

................................................................................................................................................. Lesbian but landowner British miniseries based on the encrypted diaries of Anne Lister, a (rather) openly lesbian landowner in the first half of the 19th century in Yorkshire, starring the wonderful Suranne Jones. Period drama, social portrait, brilliant period reconstruction, does not shy away from melodrama or class contradictions of her heroine, supported by the brilliant role of Suranne Jones and the great cast that supports her. It's from HBO and the BBC.

Excellent Sunday evening light entertainment .Initially rather cartoonish in terms of several character's behaviours and dialogue, imho , but the series steadily filled out and particularly over the last three episodes . A second series seems certain given the many clues and pointers . There are several candidates primed for strong future 'villain' star roles and this Halifax 'History ' looks set to play for some time . As with so many BBC Drama flag ships the production values and acting standard was near faultless . Mrs Akers/ Jones deserves every plaudit .
