Consequence
It’s rare to see a show that knows exactly what it is with this level of confidence, right from the start. The only thing more exciting than witnessing that is seeing where it goes from here.

FX’s sharp, savage English Teacher takes a refreshingly unsentimental look at public schools — and is one of the year’s funniest new shows.

It’s a sharp fast paced smart comedy. Worth a second season. It’s fun. I enjoy the characters, well cast and well written.

“English Teacher” delivers consistent laughs, evincing a sunny disposition even in the face of complex and complicated societal issues that constantly — and usually hilariously — encroach on its high school classrooms.

Tonally, it veers between the cynicism of Max’s industry satire “The Other Two” and the sincerity of Quinta Brunson’s “Abbott Elementary.” The balancing act doesn’t always work—but when it does it yields something at once smart, heartwarming, and appealingly irreverent.

With a promising starts, there’s still plenty of time to keep pushing its comedic potential.

Every episode made me laugh, and that’s all that really matters I suppose, but it’s not quite consistent enough yet to deserve placement among the FX best. It’s certainly not an A, but it’s also nowhere near flunking.

Only been 3 episodes have been released… but I've watched each episode three times, and am about to rewatch them again. It’s one of the few comedies that clicks with me at nearly 100%. The acting, the humor, and the banter are top tier. Even the predictable jokes (“Tumblr’s dead!”) land with me. The main character is perfectly flawed—a charming, hardworking, dorky egomaniac. Knowing this season only has 8 episode is devastating! But I’m glad it’s getting good reviews because I neeeeeed a yearly dose of English Teacher!!!

I wanted to like this show. The first episode seemed like a masterclass in sitcom delivery.. until I started to unpack it a bit more. The character tropes are overwhelmingly tired. You have an alt right gym teacher, a neurotic gay, a dejected principal.. and on the subject of the main character, let me just say; there’s more to being a gay man than neurotic self destruction, than open relationships and sex. The drag queen character in the 2nd episode is portrayed as a thief, a selfish villain who would steal from children. As the show goes on, the gay stereotyping gets even worse. Every gay male is little more than a sex obsessed gym bro. They all sort of blend together. This sort of representation feels dated. Some of the student/teacher scenes are funny, but the students are nothing but line deliverers. They push the jokes and then exit stage .. and we're left with a cast of stereotypical, one dimensional tropes. I would love to see a show with a similar format, with just a bit less of the stereotypical nonsense. There are a million ways to be gay, afterall.

Dialogue isn’t witty. Characters are predictable. Comes off as forced interactions.
