This one really is a feast. It’s a history lesson with an immaculate soundtrack and it is about so much more than disco.

Disco: Soundtrack of a Revolution emphasizes the beats and songs that built a classic sound, and the communities, often marginalized or under-represented, who did the hard work – and all of the dancing! – to bring it to life by the light of a turning glitterball, before the music ever went slick and mainstream.

Not every artist is covered or great song heard. But “Soundtrack” hits all the important points over its three hours, cogently presented and mostly a lot of fun — a mutually illuminating mix of anecdotal reminiscence, musical analysis, historical accounting and political theory.

The final segment, about disco’s huge cultural impact, rather peters out, but no matter. There’s still much to enjoy in this spangled homage to anarchy on the dancefloor.

"Disco: Soundtrack of a Revolution" (single season, June 2024, 3 eps, PBS) We were really looking forward to this short mini-series to recapture the excitement and frivolity of the disco era. The series synopsis states: "From the sweaty basement bars of 70s New York to the glittering peak of the global charts, how disco conquered the world - its origins, its triumphs, its fall and its legacy." However, the series instead focuses on its intersection with the LGxxx culture. So yeh, bait and switch - that is so below the standards of PBS to do that. The producers and studio execs apparently were convinced the only way to get viewership for this type of content is to hoodwink the public into watching it, gross, and shame on PBS.
