Yanks

Some may find parts of Yanks slow going. The lengthy film would have benefited from additional editing. Nevertheless, it is an emotionally and visually compelling work that will not be easily forgotten.

The director, John Schlesinger ("Midnight Cowboy"), and writer, Colin Welland ("Chariots of Fire"), have captured the period with contagious affection, but there are only two first-rate performances to carry the story for 141 minutes. [03 Oct 1991, p.F3]

Director John Schlesinger has done a beautiful job with both cast and craft in Yanks, a multiple love story set in England in World War II. Yet little that's exciting ever happens in the picture.

The sketchy story simply isn’t strong enough, nor the characters sufficiently involving, to sustain interest for nearly 2 1/2 hours.

Well-made but often-boring.

Yanks never succeeds, however, in making these three stories urgent or especially moving.
