Los Angeles Times
No one, with the possible exception of Bruce Lee, conveyed as much onscreen energy as Jimmy Cagney, and this musical biopic of George M. Cohan has that in spades, culminating in a dance down the White House stairs that is unforgettable. [03 Apr 2020, p.E1]

Variety
Yankee Doodle Dandy is something to cheer about from any perspective.

The New York Times
As warm and delightful a musical picture as has hit the screen in years, a corking good entertainment and as affectionate, if not as accurate, a film biography as has ever—yes, ever—been made.

The A.V. Club
There may be no American movie more patriotic than Yankee Doodle Dandy, a jingoistic biopic of famed Broadway star George M. Cohan that transcends its innumerable genre clichés through the sheer willpower of its star.

The New Yorker
A big, enjoyable musical biography, well directed by Michael Curtiz.

Chicago Reader
If you can push past the flag-waving, this Warner Brothers effort from 1942 is a superior entry in a dubious genre, the musical biography. Michael Curtiz's direction is supple and intelligent, but what makes the movie is James Cagney's manic blur of a performance.

Time Out
Now it seems raucous, vulgar, over long; but if you like slick jobs, this is certainly one of the slickest.

James Cagney, the actor who best embodied the vitality of big-city life, finds a surprising yet perfect role as the brash Irish-American composer and dancer George M. Cohan, laureate of the American Dream. However, the outdated propagandist patriotism and the use of blackface create discomfort that demands critical reflection. These problematic aspects overshadow the film's entertainment value, making it a difficult watch today.
