That rare thing, a Hollywood teen flick transfigured into something like pubescent scripture: In the beginning, there was lust; in the end, there is knowledge.

Like watching an American teen-sex comedy through a glass darkly.

It has the charm of the original American road movies, feasting on the gorgeous, ramshackle landscape of the filmmaker's motherland.

The film's biggest limitation is its oversexed, underdeveloped male duo. Playing like a south-of-the-border version of Beavis and Butt-head, the teenagers have but one thought in their heads.

A beautiful tour of the Mexican countryside. The female lead wasn't the best, but the male leads were pretty good.

Selling me a porn as if it were existentialism. A tiring and wearisome film that hides behind an elevated discourse to justify its own insistence. 'Y Tu Mamá También' presents itself as a reflection on life, desire, the passage of time — on living and feeling — yet it relies on a constant provocation that repeatedly confuses the explicit with the profound. Alfonso and Carlos Cuarón seem eager to teach a lesson about life, but before the first fifty seconds have passed, there is already a sexual scene. Before five minutes are up, there is another. This pattern repeats itself as if sex were a cinematic language of its own, without ever becoming a truly revealing narrative tool. The film insists on selling an idea of vital discovery, of paying attention to small moments, of desire as a metaphor for being alive. The idea itself is not flawed; the execution is. What undermines it is an exhausting repetition of naked bodies, adolescent conversations, and impulsive decisions that fail to lead to any meaningful evolution. The emotional conflict is present and occasionally felt, but it dissolves within a staging more concerned with provocation than construction. One of the film’s greatest weaknesses lies in its interpretive core. Luisa, portrayed by Maribel Verdú, feels forced, artificial, and devoid of truth. Her performance aligns with the film’s tone in the worst possible way, nullifying any potential emotional subtext. It is overwrought, fatiguing, and generates rejection rather than empathy. This is not merely an issue of unpleasant dialogue — which at times is delivered in a way that feels physically nauseating — but of execution as a whole. The persistent sensation is that of watching the performance of an idea, not the embodiment of a real person. Even as a Spanish-speaking viewer, communication becomes opaque. It is not only the slang or dialect that creates distance, but also an early vocal delivery and rhythm that hinder comprehension and fracture immersion. Surprisingly, not everything collapses. There is something genuinely appreciable in the film’s technical execution. The cinematography is engaging, particularly in its recurrent use of long takes, which lend a sense of naturalism that sharply contrasts with the emotional rigidity of the narrative. Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna also bring a degree of light into the film. Ironically, they are the ones who most intensify the sexual component, yet their chemistry and friendship manage to sustain interest and provide a reason to see the film through to its conclusion. 'Y Tu Mamá También' aims to speak about the ephemeral nature of life, about existence slipping away if it is not lived intensely. But here, that idea feels imposed, reiterated, and stripped of authenticity. It does not come across as a reflection. Perhaps the problem is me as a viewer — though I believe I understand what the film wants to convey — but I find it difficult to take this existential tale seriously when its narrative foundation ultimately resembles a Latin American version of 'American Pie'.

Wow, this was horrific. Alfonso Cuaron is a decent director and he does his best here, but man oh man does this movie ****. The story is horrible and poorly written, as evidenced by the needless narration that serves as purely unnecessary exposition, as well as rambling on about past/future events that are not depicted in the story at all. The characters are grating and entirely unenjoyable. Honestly, the movie is pretty much just hardcore porn. It is an hour and 40 minutes long, but at least an hour and 30 minutes of that is probably sex. Only a minor exaggeration. This movie does have some interesting thoughts on growing up, marriage, and sex, but it just gets drowned out in a sea of immaturity and annoyance. I honestly feel violated by this movie and have no idea how it is so acclaimed. Call me a prude, but sex is not a story. It felt like it was on the same level as some pornographic film in terms of its commitment to following a narrative when, in reality, everyone was just there to get laid and the plot was coincidental. I am not a huge fan of Cuaron's work and, well, this one will not convince me I have erred on my previous assessment.

I cannot believe this movie has this high score! It is soooo overrated! I mean, there is no real story, it is just sex and the end is so corny! This is the type of Spanish movie that in Europe (especially Spain) is known as 'made to sell, because sex sells' but of course in our Anglo-Saxon countries, we believe that just because a movie comes from Europe -especially Spain, or France- is good, but that way of thinking is so naive!!!. Honestly, this movie is so disappointing! If I give him a 2 is because well, because ...I don't even know why, perhaps there are worse movies that I don't manage to finish watching, and I did finish watching this one! Anyway, I have no intentions to ever watch this movie again. It is slow, and doesn't have a good storyline. The performances are plain, so is the photography; and even the actors's looks (male and female) were nothing but **** absolutely nothing to enjoy, or applaud! PS: Did you know that many Spaniards- I mean many- avoid watching Spanish movies precisely because the abuse of sex and the lack of argument...?and many of those movies that there are considered movies for the taste of the 'masses' (and by 'masses' they do not mean, merely 'working class', but has more of a 'cheap' 'vulgar' connotation) are praised outside Spain! Embarrasing!
