The Daily Beast
A sly, sinister film about self-loathing, sacrifice, and the things people will do to survive—with a great tormented performance from Dakota Fanning at its center.

Bertino and Fanning make some wholly horrific magic together, and their diabolical efforts culminate in a wonderfully sinister parable that is nearly impossible to forget.

I read that there was a different version and now I’m curious bc it sounds like there were a lot of cuts made, which might explain why there doesn’t seem to be the payoff you expect at the end. Hopefully we get to see it how it was intended, but in the meantime, this was a sick and twisted piece of psychological warfare and I’ll be thinking about it for a while.

Great acting. Great cinematography. Good story but it's hard to connect all of the dots. Perhaps if there is a second movie more of the lore behind the box will be explained, but for now it's quite vague. All in all, a very good psychological horror and worth a watch.

Bertino and Fanning are deeply committed to going to dark places, and they take us along for their freaky little ride. Whether it makes sense or not. (Probably not.)

There are more misses than connections in the third act, and for its title, it's never really vicious enough despite the blood and gore to come. Still, it'll keep you on your toes as it's cutting off someone else's.

It’s as if Bertino the director knows that Bertino the writer hasn’t done quite enough to engender audience interest in Polly’s plight so he seeks to pummel the audience into terror instead of drawing them in.

Bertino doesn’t need to give us another Strangers, and we certainly do not need anything else in that particular universe, but he needs to give us something more striking, and certainly stranger, than Vicious.

The movie devolves into something inexact and thoughtless, without anything distinct to recenter it. It’s hardly a sin for cruelty to be the point, especially in horror. But you have to at least land your punches.

Dakota Fanning, mulher perfeita!!!

I'm not a big fan of jumpscares, that's ground level of horror and a century old trick. And there are a few... The rest is ok, though a bit 'softcore'. Watchable still

The only two good things about this so called horror movie are Dakota Fanning's performance and its low budget.

I watched about 40 minutes of this... movie, if that's what you want to call it. A lot of needless gore revolving around a cursed box with all the tired tropes of what passes for paranormal horror now, it became unwatchable at the point I stopped watching. Blood and mutilation are not substitutes for a coherent plot! I'd suggest that modern script writers look to classic horror stories for inspiration, instead of trusting in their own imagination. WW Jacobs "The Monkey's Paw" would be a good place to start in the cursed items category. Be better!
