The Truth doesn’t have very much of a plot. What little there is serves as a clothesline for its two excellent leads to hang their performances out to dry.

The story gradually emerges through an accretion of details and personal dynamics, often in families that stand in for the larger world. Things happen quietly or offscreen. The drama is measured out in sips, in gazes, gestures, silences, off-handed humor and shocks of brutality.

Perhaps a filmmaker whose powers were less orderly, less morally driven to soothe and pacify, could have pushed Fabienne—and Deneuve—to tragic and stylistic extremes that would have rendered the film’s reconciliations as mighty as its conflicts. Hirokazu Kore-eda makes his first film out of Japan, and it's just exactly what you would expect. The Japanese director translates very well his style to occidental storytelling; still, there are some plotlines and scenes built in a very oriental tradition, like those involving the girl and another contemplative one, in which one of the actresses goes upstairs during filming and waves almost religiously. 'The Truth' reminded me of 'Clouds of Sils Maria' in a lot of ways. Catherine Deneuve kind of takes Juliette Binoche's role in that film, in which a famous actress contemplates her life and career amidst the rise of a younger artist, who, in turn, is chosen to play one of the roles she was known for. The film may not be Kore-eda's best work, but it's nice to see the chemistry between all these great actors. Language, as you will see, was not a barrier for the Japanese director to manage this talent.
