The Sheep Detectives brims with charm, wit, and a twisty murder mystery that can only be solved by the most endearing set of farm animals since Farmer Hoggett said “That’ll do” to Babe the pig.

Like any good murder mystery movie, the real fun lies in watching the performances and taking the overall journey. “The Sheep Detective” scores big on both of those counts. This is one of the most enjoyable movies of the year.

A wonderful movie! The film struck me with its balance: it's witty, but not stupid; touching, but without excessive sentimentality. Hugh Jackman and the entire cast did 100%! British provincial landscapes, a cozy atmosphere and unexpected plot twists. That case when the movie turned out to be much better than you expect before watching it. The ratings on Rotten Tomatoes are completely justified!

The Sheep Detectives, a family-friendly whodunit that marries pastoral whimsy with unexpectedly weighty themes, is a rare, woolly beast.

The evidence adds up cleverly and the script doesn’t coast on its status as a nice family movie in order to avoid delivering a satisfying conclusion. It’s meaty, like a roast leg of, well, you know.

There’s plenty to like, and this starter kit for detective fiction ought to serve as more of a net positive for kids than another soulless reboot of existing IP. But it’s a shame to settle for merely good when something great was very clearly a plausible outcome.

The film does aim for something a little deeper by also making it about the sheep being forced to acknowledge and experience the realities of death, and there are a couple of moments of sheep-based existential revelation that are surprisingly moving. At its best it even occasionally recalls vintage Aardman, particularly something like the original Chicken Run film.

No matter how many witty lines (there are a few) are placed into the mouths of postproduction beasties, they never seem real, nor do they interact credibly with their human co-stars (think Jar Jar Binks from Star Wars, but on all fours).

What a delightful movie with witty dialog, a good mystery and some strong messages about acceptance and cooperation. Great for kids and very entertaining for adults. 10/10

The trailer made me feel like this would be a very childish movie but it wasn't! I was very surprised at how good this is. It's a very nice, light story full of quirky-funny moments!

The Sheep Detectives is a rare family film that trusts its audience - both children and adults - to feel genuine emotions without manipulation. Kyle Balda crafts a film that's genuinely funny (Nicholas Braun's bumbling detective is comedy gold), deeply moving about grief and loss, and narratively clever without ever winking at the camera. The Agatha Christie whodunnit template could've felt stale, but the sheep investigation gives it fresh life. What's remarkable is how seamlessly it balances tones: one moment you're laughing at sheep debating clues over dinner, the next you're contemplating what it means to lose someone you love and continue their legacy. The film respects both its animal characters and its young viewers by refusing easy sentimentality. Rebecca's journey from outsider to caretaker, the sheep learning to narrate their own mystery - these feel earned, not manipulative. Hugh Jackman's absence is felt throughout (a bold choice), and the epilogue where the new lamb named George inherits the nightly storytelling ritual is genuinely moving. This film lands in that impossibly small category of modern family films that work across generations because it has something real to say about love, loss, and continuity. 8.5/10: Heartwarming without ever feeling saccharine.

Hugh Jackman plays the kindly shepherd who’s murdered and it’s up to his sheep to solve the case. The talking sheep had potential for a cute comedy, but even though they have some personality, the dialogue's never especially smart or clever. Even with voices that include Patrick Stewart, Regina Hall, Chris O’Dowd and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Things start off with bright charm and a few laughs, but the whole affair soon becomes a more traditional whodunit. As the local cop, Nicholas Braun brings some of his wonky charm, but that’s not sufficient. Director Kyle Balda (“Minions,” “Despicable Me 3”) knows his way around quirky characters, but this script doesn’t provide sufficient eccentricity or humor. It ultimately becomes a sweet little mystery, without the wacky fun that the premise promised.

I only gave this 2 stars, as there are certainly worse movies out there, but wow was this awful. Nothing interesting happens in the entire film. There are far too many "tender moments" between the sheep, so much so that it is easy to forget what the movie is even about. Lots of formulaic humor; the type you'd expect to see in a b-movie for kids. Think of a movie you saw as a kid and thought was "okay" in the theater, but when you went to watch it again as an adult you thought, "OMG that did not age well at ALL." This is one of those moves. This is a boring, uninspired film that unsuccessfully uses its premise alone to try to drive an entire film. Audiences are sure to forget this movie ever even existed by 2027.
