Designed to fit, then subvert and smash, archetypes, the two leads of The School for Good and Evil and their strong friendship turn the movie from fantastical fun to memorable delight.

While the talented and versatile director Paul Feig (“Freaks and Geeks,” “Bridesmaids,” “A Simple Favor”) displays an admirably ambitious reach, and there are some impressive visuals, The School for Good and Evil never quite finds its footing.

I just watched this movie today and all I can say is, it was fantastic. The whole storyline and narrative of the film was brilliant, the casting was also very good. It is definitely worth the watch. Both young actors playing the main characters delivered convincing performances, in my opinion. The majority of the characters were stereotypical high school students that were well represented and portrayed. The visual effects, setting and camera work throughout the film was satisfactory. Overall, I give this film a higher rating as I believe the message is culturally important and I also adore the fact it was filmed in Belfast, my hometown in Northern Ireland.

The film doesn’t have the space to expand all of its ideas and gracefully unfold its plot, which is full of so many narrative twists and reversals that The School for Good and Evil equates to a whole TV season untidily packed into a feature film.

All of these potentially effective elements—as well as a stellar cast that includes Charlize Theron, Kerry Washington, and Michelle Yeoh—get swallowed up by the overwhelming reliance on CGI-infused action sequences. They’re both empty and endless, and too often leave you wondering what’s going on and why we should bother.

The teen-targeted fantasy-romance The School for Good and Evil is an exhaustingly long, overstuffed movie that probably would’ve worked better as a TV series.

If we’re reaching for something, anything nice to say here – and we absolutely are – Theron’s black trouser suit and trench coat is a strong look.

This is a uniquely tiresome slog — madly over-plotted, thuddingly derivative, insanely overlong and slathered in a big symphonic score that strives to infuse momentum into a saga with minimal emotional stakes.

I think this movie is meant more for teenage girls the way it is set up, but it did have nice visuals and the story was not that bad in general, but yeah I am not really the main audience for this. As I understand it is based on a book so the book readers I guess are the main ones it is intended to or teenagers

What an... Eesh movie. That's all there is to it. It's not great, nor is it the scorn of the earth. My Mother and I watched it the other day, and we could both say it's an iffy movie. It certainly had it's fair share of ups and downs; every movie does. However, The School For Good and Evil's negatives outshined the negatives. Again, I'm not here to bash it. I'm just saying there was more that could have been done to make it better.
