Sharply observed with a top-notch cast and a pleasing old-school vibe, The Instigators is tremendously entertaining.

There’s a lot to be said for a movie that knows exactly what it wants to be and hits that exact mark; it’s not that The Instigators lacks ambition, but like its characters, it doesn’t dream too big. It shows up to do its job — finding the fun.

Matt Damon and Casey Affleck play hapless guys who get involved in a heist to rob the Mayor of Boston. Everything quickly goes wrong and they spend the rest of the film getting into and out of incredibly impossible situations. And they do it with the help of a smart script (which Affleck co-wrote) and snappy direction by action vet Doug Liman. Affleck's character gets most of the funny quips, while Damon has the heart of the film. The rest of the cast is crammed with talented actors. There are a few crazy action scenes, but lots more quick thinking and wild luck. Every time their heist gets complex and hopeless, the stakes rise and so does the entertainment value. Smart and fun! NOTE: Sit thru the credits for some more tidbits.

I liked the movie a lot. It reminded me a bit of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. My favorite parts of the movie are when Matt Damon Casey Affleck, and Hong Chen argue amonst each other. Not only that you've got this wild cast of characters going after these "alleged" bad guys. The Instigators reminded me of the best 70's action buddy movies.

Does his film fishtail around narratively? Does it feel overly episodic? Does it lack any sort of stick-to-the-ribs substance? In order: Yes, probably and for sure. But it is also a fun and enjoyable summertime diversion, and sometimes that’s all the message a movie needs.

While surfacing sometimes thanks to a decades-old friendship, 'The Instigators' remains a tonally chaotic sinking boat.

More than anything, The Instigators is ethnic comedy if being a white guy from Boston counts as its own ethnicity, an argument that Damon and the Afflecks have spent a good portion of their careers making. Those local specifics and in-jokes may not amount to much, but they are what distinguishes this film from other half-baked crime movies.

The Instigators is little more than a stacked cast list on an Apple budget, waiting for a good script to materialise.

This Apple TV heist flick is underwritten, dreary, tedious, inert, and without any stakes. I almost hesitate to write too much about it because this soulless dreck feels so unworthy of adding blemishes to the white page.

IN A NUTSHELL: The story is about two robbers who go on the run with the help of a therapist after a theft doesn’t go as planned. The amusing heist movie was directed by Doug Liman. Writing credits go to Chuck MacLean and Casey Affleck. The beloved duo Ben Affleck and Matt Damon worked as the producers of the film. A lot of film critics hated this, but I think a lot of viewers will get a kick out of it, especially if they’re fans of certain cast members. I did. THINGS I LIKED: I love this cast. The movie features two Academy Award winners: Matt Damon and Casey Affleck. They’re both so natural on the Big Screen and always give us entertaining characters that always make us root for them. The rest of the cast was terrific and included Hong Chau (Oscar nominee), Alfred Molina, Ron Perlman, Andre De Shields, Toby Jones, Jack Harlow, Paul Walter Hauser, Ving Rhames, and more. Rob Gronkowski plays himself. All of the characters are fleshed out really well with clear motivations. I love it when Matt Damon uses his Boston accent and celebrates his roots. There’s plenty of action sequences, including several car chases. The food at that bakery looked delicious. The soundtrack is a lot of fun. The dialogue and banter is amusing and ridiculous. THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE: Some of the plot points are a bit of a stretch. TIPS FOR PARENTS: Tons of profanity, including a million F-bombs Kids will be bored Criminals shoot and kill people. We see bloodied, dead bodies. People steal and commit other crimes Lots of destruction Someone flips the bird.

The movie was ok even though not that memorable, but I think it was decent - nothing special but not that bad either.

This is what happens when two rich actors from Boston wished they could have produced MIDNIGHT RUN. There are MIDNIGHT RUN Easter Eggs everywhere, and an egg or two from DOG DAY AFTERNOON. If you're young and like films, see this but then see those two extraordinary source films.

A movie that wants to be a heist film, a comedy, a drama, and whatever else they can throw in, but fails utterly at all of them. The jokes are flat, there is no real action sequences and the attempted drama elements lack true character development. I love Matt Damon and I know he usually is the bar for revenue return, but this film relegates itself to the B movie stack.

The Instigators review this movie is kinda like a live action version of GTA but not in a good way so but it’s not GTA but it’s kinda like that’s where they got the inspiration from when they was making this movie. It’s better than the wolf movie but it’s still this one’s not good either mostly talking talking you have like bank stuff robbery, and all that stuff just fine but also of that like I said a lot of that is mostly GTA while the instigator is like this action crime comedy movie like I said like like GTA it’s like it’s still not good. It’s not good and it’s kind of also suffers from you put two actors together. You never think that you never think that they will be in a movie together and it’s like you’ll see what happens. Got my Damien and Casey Affleck, which is he siblings with Ben Affleck so you know like I said is it’s kinda like that it’s like it was kinda like a dream team type of thing like you never saw this happening and it happens but it doesn’t but it wasn’t good enough to be. It wasn’t good enough to be in a movie theater it was a streaming movie. Well, I will say that this movie is worthy of a movie theater about the same time. It would flop at the box office because it’s not GTA it was the you know it’s casting 2 star 2 out 10 star 12 out 100 star
