The pervasive aura of creepiness more than compensates for the low body count and inventive use of sharp instrumentation.

The handsomely shot, expertly button-pushing scare-fest has the polish and the cast to draw older audiences who grew up on shockers built from performances rather than CGI.

Whatever your belief system, this much is gospel: Movies like The Conjuring are less about the battle between God and Satan than the battle between the silly and the scary.

With its forked tongue planted loosely in cheek, this haunted-house flick is enjoyably retro in both style and substance.

The big difference is that "The Exorcist" took the nation by storm with fresh ideas and brilliant filmmaking. The Conjuring conjures with amped-up echoes of old ideas, and represents a bet that they still retain their creepy appeal for today's audience.

The Conjuring is as toothless as it is because it's two different kinds of boring. The film's plot is explained exhaustively whenever loud noises aren't blaring, and random objects aren't teasingly leaping out at you from the corner of your eye.

A Masterclass in Terror and a Blueprint for the Genre" The Conjuring" is a truly phenomenal horror film that serves as a powerful testament to how a horror movie should be made. It's a cinematic masterpiece of terror that earns its scares through masterful atmosphere, psychological dread, and a compelling narrative, rather than relying on cheap tricks or gratuitous **** film's genius lies in its patient and meticulous build-up of tension. Director James Wan expertly uses every element—from eerie silence to unsettling sound design and meticulously crafted shadow play—to create a constant sense of unease that gets under your skin. This is horror that respects its audience, allowing the fear to creep in slowly and organically until it becomes a suffocating presence. Beyond the technical brilliance, the film is anchored by a strong, emotionally resonant story. The characters, both the beleaguered Perron family and the dedicated paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, are deeply human and relatable. Their fear feels genuine, making their plight all the more terrifying. The outstanding performances by the cast make you care about their fate, which is a crucial element that many horror films miss. The film perfectly executes classic haunted house tropes with a fresh, modern sensibility. It's a rare horror movie that manages to be consistently frightening without ever feeling stale or predictable. Every jump scare is earned, and every chilling moment contributes to the overall terrifying experience. Overall, "The Conjuring" is not just a great horror movie; it's a definitive example of what the genre can and should be. It is a terrifying, emotional, and impeccably crafted film that deserves its perfect rating.

If you forget that this is supposed to be based on real demonhunters (lol), it's actually a fun movie for the whole family.

This is an ok horror/ghost/spooks & ghoulies type film. There are some jump scares and its somewhat atmospheric but it's also fairly predictable to an extent and its cheesy towards the end. I felt it was a shame there wasn't more in terms of plot detail given. I wouldn't overly recommend this film, no.

I was shocked at how this film played out. It was just so boring compared to other horror films I have seen. The Others and the Haunting in Connecticut were just so much better than this. I haven't seen the second film yet, so I won't judge the sequel. The film wasn't scary or have suspense. 3/10
