Ali has found his footing as surely as has his protagonist, Ved (Ranbir Kapoor), in this satisfying and emotionally challenging tale of a young New Delhi man struggling to determine which parts of his life are artifice and which are real.

The biggest offender is the director, Imtiaz Ali, who, also again collaborating with Mr. Kapoor, actually celebrates two love affairs: Ved and Tara’s, and (given Ved’s universal adulation) Mr. Ali’s with his own self-aggrandizing vision of his calling.

This is a vain love story that calls back to classic love stories. Yet I suspended my judgment and let my heart run as free as the characters' fictions. When the protagonist tells a story to his father, I cried.
