Small Engine Repair is a real American horror story, skillfully shot, perfectly cast and acted, and carrying a sorrowful message that resonates with brutal truth.

In less skilled hands, this could have come across as cynical and manipulative material, but Pollono is such a skilled wordsmith and the cast is so universally excellent, Small Engine Repair becomes a viewing experience you won’t easily shake off, not today and not for a long time.

The darkly funny American indie drama Small Engine Repair works best when it’s a hangout comedy starring three schlubby New England burnouts.

While Small Engine Repair’s message is clear, it doesn’t completely take off and is fragmented in its pacing, with a twisted turn that doesn't land.

The film, which Pollono also directs, provides more depth than the original but still flounders in the translation from stage to screen.

The results, although sporadically arresting, feel awkward, like a child wearing clothing a few sizes too big.

Small Engine Repair is little more than 103 minutes of a would-be provocation whose only real advantage is that it's ultimately too dopey to be as offensive as it clearly could have been. It has nothing of note to say about the issues it pretends to raise, though it does try to say them as loudly and as pseudo-colorfully as possible.

This was a weird one for me. The first part of it was very difficult to get through, I actually found myself looking at my watch. But I ended up absolutely LOVING this movie. Very powerful and tense.

Set in Manchester, New Hampshire (which they call "Manch Vegas"), the film is about a group of a Irish American friends who are prone to heavy drinking and fighting. The story could be about any ethnic group, but given their boorish behavior, not necessarily the kind of guys you would want to spend with for an hour, much less than entire evening. However, as an examination of the destructive nature of toxic masculinity, "Small Engine Repair" is very effective as drama. In the beginning you wonder where everything is heading, but by the end the film makes sense.
