She Will

What is undeniable is its sense of vision, a fully realized work that marks Colbert as a director to watch in absolutely anything she takes on next.

A thrillingly intense central performance by Alice Krige (who earned her genre spurs in the underrated 1981 screen adaptation of Peter Straub’s Ghost Story) is the lightning rod at the core of the film, grounding its hallucinogenic visuals in the terra firma of past tragedies and modern traumas, provoking “dark thoughts; really dark thoughts”.

It’s stylish and chilling, with a lively feminist undercurrent.

Blending sensuous imagery with jabs of feminist wit — at one point, a vibrator is weaponized against a male intruder — Colbert sends her heroine on a transformative journey of revenge and renewal.

She Will isn't exactly a horror movie. It has its creepy moments, particularly in the visual collages and Clint Mansell's unnerving score, but it's more thought-provoking than scary.

It feels like She Will spends its entire runtime on the very cusp of a completed sentence. I was desperate for an explanation, but the film is frustratingly secretive – those answers, it seems, are still buried deep.

She Will can’t decide if its horror or comedy, nor does it strike the balance that would harmoniously hybridize them.

The plot of She Will is not complicated in any way, but there is a deep theme at its core. At the beginning it manages to keep the suspense because it is much more interested in symbolism and atmosphere, which I can say is quite good, or as far as I can tell I liked it a lot. It looks like a horror movie, but it's not exactly one. There is more than one creepy moment, but the story itself is meant to be more of a thought-provoking experience rather than one that terrifies you. In this case it's just that the presentation it chooses to develop its plot is more rooted in that tone rather than being a basic drama, after all the story is about trauma and externalizes it in a rather interesting way. I liked it. With reservations, but I liked it. Also Dario Argento produced it. I mention it in case that motivates you to see it.

It has some combination of good cinematography and bad filtered stock videos. Its pretentious, flat and its feminist underplot is not enough to save it or give it meaninfullness. Total waste of time.
