Watchable, but not very compelling, Lavish Technicolor production, Huge sets, fancy costumes, mammoth opera scenes, All money is up on screen, But Phantom is more of a tragic figure, He is shown before he goes psycho, Way too much of his back story, Needed more mystery about his character. The horror should've been amped up and the music sequences edited down, , Claude Rains gives a solid performance, as does girl who plays Christine,

This was dreadfully boring unfortunately, the underlying characters stories and motivations were not enough to support the weak tension and snails pace.

To be sure, the production is elegant. Settings and costumes are superfine and, photographed in technicolor, they all mawe a lavish display. But that richness of décor and music is precisely what gets in the way of the tale.

The accent is more on musical extravaganza than horror, with endless operatic snippets for Eddy and Foster to warble, making it all a somewhat tiresome waste of Rains' performance.

Someone at Universal had the brainstorm of redoing the 1925 silent Lon Chaney horror picture and taking advantage of the fact that it was set in an opera house to make it not only a sound picture but a high-toned musical. The result is this flaccid, sedate version.

Worldwide's third, second English adaptation. Captive Wild Woman was the boring movie in Universal Horror, but I am changing my mind; this movie, is hard to finish. Even worse, the process of the story changed.
