Night Swim

Last-act let-down aside, this is a confident and creepy ghoul-in-the-pool horror that makes Bryce McGuire a filmmaker to watch. Wusses, bring armbands.

Night Swim comes from a crafty 2014 short directed by Blackhurst and McGuire, not quite three minutes in length minus end credits. Apples and oranges, I suppose, but the short gets more done in terms of atmosphere and rhythmic wiles than the full-length version. Still: These filmmakers have both a past and a future in evocative horror.

Wyatt Russell and Kerry Condon's suburban horror feels like an adaptation of a Stephen King story that he never got round to writing.

The problem with Night Swim is that it’s trying to say a little too much, which isn’t a complete pleasure-killer, but can get distracting.

Despite the filmmaker’s best efforts to drum up suspense via the usual jump scares, Night Swim turns out to be just as silly as it sounds.

While diverting enough for its forgiving 98-minute runtime, Night Swim neither sinks nor floats. It just wades in the waters of “whatever.”

Night Swim has its characters make infuriatingly asinine decisions to serve its plot.

Killer elevator, killer lamb, killer attic. Now, killer pool. I love these kinds of trashy horrors. Yet, considering the concept, it is shockingly good. The main problem is final. Could have been much better. But, it was fine.

Not bad and not great. I don’t know why but it worked. Nicer than other horror films.

Le plus grand problème du film, c'est qu'il est incohérent et ça saute aux yeux. Hormis cet énorme défaut, le film est meilleur que je le pensais. Sans spoil, on parle quand même d'une piscine tueuse, évidemment que je n'étais pas spécialement emballé. Au final, l'histoire est agréable à suivre, et si on enlève le côté un peu mystique / **** vers la fin, elle reste correcte. Les acteurs, je les ai trouvés assez bon dans leur rôle (sans être géniaux). L'utilisation de l'eau est bien utilisée et marche pas mal. Néammoins, le film manque quand même de ce petit quelques choses qui ferait réellement peur. L'ambiance n'est pas assez pesante même quand elle doit l'être et hormis des **** sursauts, vous n'aurez pas grand-chose. C'est plus un film d'horreur très moyen qu'un bon film au final, rattrapé par quelques idées.
