Aside from its phenomenal script and performances, Night Comes On delights with stunning visuals.

Like its determined heroine, Night Comes On burns with a smoldering fire, a heat that is no less intense, no less effective, for remaining largely beneath the surface.

Spiro has produced a beautiful film on loss, and the cycles of violence that all too many are understandably pulled into, yet she still manages to give us a glimmer of hope in a world of desperation.

The actress Jordana Spiro directed Night Comes On and wrote the script with Angelica Nwandu, a spoken-word poet and creator of the incisive gossip website The Shade Room. Ms. Nwandu is also a former client of the foster care system. The result of their partnership is a film that balances penetrating clarity with compassion.

This is a movie that’s honest about night coming on, but it also reminds us of the small things that will get you through that night, until the morning dawns.

Night Comes On isn’t a docudrama, but it’s informed enough to give us a sense of the obstacles facing young women like Angel.

All through the film, you pray it doesn’t go down the bleak routes that films like this usually go — and, most of the time, it does. Night Comes On is an assured first shot from Spiro but, damn, I couldn’t wait for this fucking thing to be over.

Heartbreaking
This deserves multiple Oscars, especially for the performances.
A revenge story with a soul, highly recommended

This is a gritty film. Its not an action film but it does reasonably well at portraying siblings trying to get some form of justice for what has happened to them. It features some good camerawork and isn't overly full of dialogue but I think that helps it to seem a bit more substantial than, perhaps, other similar films. Its not quite what I expected and it isn't a film likely to stay in my mind for very long but that aside, its not a bad **** ok one. I wouldn't especially recommend going out of your way to see it but if its on TV and interests you then it may be worth a watch.
