The action sequences are as suspenseful as any in the director's career; the most impressive scenes, though, may be the slower ones, which consider how humanity might evolve after driving itself to near extinction.

Big ambitions inspire great designs; little things bring them to life. Nausicaa has both in abundance.

A beautiful film. Rich, compelling, well-written, and emotionally powerful, yet also funny and lighthearted at just the right times. The animation is incredible, the soundtrack is great, the characters are fantastic, it has great themes and executes them beautifully... and there's a sense of magic and beauty that permeates throughout the whole thing. A masterpiece.

Stellar stuff.

Hayao Miyazaki’s animated adventure, from 1984, is a magnificent anomaly—a rousing vision of scorched earth.

Dreamlike Ghibli animation that's well worth seeking out.

The film is good-hearted, energetic, and full of Ghibli's characteristically beautiful hand-rendered animation, but it's also lightweight and hyper, with none of Miyazaki's more resonant themes.

Miyazaki’s first hit fascinates as a glimpse into the master’s then-developing style, even when the final-act storytelling gets woozy.

Though technically a pre-Ghibli work, "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind" feels very much like a typical effort from the studio in question, albeit slightly lesser (for me, at least). The thematic underpinnings are there, but a little bit more heavy-handed than I'm used to when it comes to Miyazaki's stories. The visuals are — as always — terrific to look at, but I think the post-apocalyptic setting strips away an opportunity for true vibrance. It's also decidedly more violent than I was expecting. I know I'm nowhere near caught up in my Ghibli filmography viewing attempts, but I don't think I'm coloring outside the lines when I say that this might be the bloodiest thing Miyazaki's done to my knowledge. With that, though, there's still plenty of enjoyment to be had. The characters are likeable and well developed. The creativity is undeniable. I just think this was a very clear starting point for Miyazaki rather than the pinnacle of anything we know he's capable of.

so much feminism in this movie, I stopped to watch after 40 minutes. And find it disturbing to see a young woman running half naked all the time.
