It’s a genuine triumph, not just in its construction as a kid’s movie comedy sequence but also as a distillation of all the cinematic pioneers who paved the way for something like the Minions to exist, let alone succeed.

Coffin is fine inviting them into the big tent with the rest of us, if only to show where the Hollywood blockbuster machine can find its next gear. Go back to basics, his film says. Entertain, invigorate and charm. Not every movie has to be “Citizen Kane.” Just get everyone laughing.

It’s a charming, brightly animated love letter to Hollywood’s heyday and a celebration of the moviegoing experience.

Their antics speak to my inner 6-year-old. The script, by Coffin and Brian Lynch, builds several gags on a foundation of intelligent movie knowledge, which speaks to the cinephile in me. The 90-minute runtime is also a big plus.

Minions & Monsters may not be everyone's cup of tea. It sees the threshold that makes you ask, "Is this too much?" written on the wall and proceeds to blast straight through it with the force of a bulldozer. But that kind of loud, in-your-face approach to comedy is what the Minions are supposed to be.

The overall tone remains as juvenile as ever. It is goofy and giggly and resolutely wedded to stupidity. There’s little attempt to add much depth to the story, in the way that Pixar might try to — it is essentially, once again, just a series of contrived opportunities for the little guys to get up to chaotic mischief. And so it goes. The world keeps on turning.

Minions & Monsters — the third chapter in the ongoing standalone adventures of the “Despicable Me” pint-sized enablers — is about the sheer greatness of moviemaking, and it’s a navel-gazing misfire.

Minions & Monsters is the best entry in the franchise, a love letter to old Hollywood that serves as the launchpad for the antics the Minions are known for. It’s silly stuff, but also surprisingly heartfelt. Highly Recommended. detroitcineaste

Good movie with a couple of funny moments but wasn’t as good as previous installments

With time, the Despicable Me-Minion Universe at Illumination had lost its charm. The first Despicable Me was fresh, about a villain with a heart. But as the sequels kept coming, the quality went down by a lot. The Minions continue to be adorable though. No one knows how many Minions are there. Minions & Monsters answers that by taking us on the road that another group of Minions had taken & how they changed Hollywood in the latter 1920s. I was pleasantly surprised by this Minions adventure. Who knew shifting the story to another group of identical looking species would make a difference? Maybe Illumination had figured out how to carve out more movies by expanding on the idea of multiple groups of Minions in different parts of the world. Gru doesn't need to be there in every movie. The Hollywood set story is fun with numerous references to the silent era of movies and movie making. Though it is a Minion, we are shown how following one's dreams is important and perseverance & having the right people by your side makes a world of difference. The characters - Henry, James & **** are an entertaining trio with them battling monsters & aliens, all to just make a movie. Minions & Monsters may be the best Minion movie, but the franchise has run its course. It is time to sign off for the cutest little minions.

the animation is great but if you are coming back for the great minion/despicable me hilarity, its for some reason almost non existent in this latest installment of the series. i heard three or four laughs in the theater i saw this in during the whole movie.

Cons: For a movie called “Minions and Monsters,” I really expected there to be more monsters. There are so many famous classic movie monsters who could have made an appearance in this film, and yet they barely scratched the surface in terms of how many monsters were featured. Also, I feel like the marketing for this movie was misleading. The story wasn’t really about the minions encountering many famous monsters. Instead, it was more about the minions dabbling in making movies as sort of a celebratory homage to the history of Hollywood. Finally, this movie is just kinda random, and I don't even really know why it exists. It doesn’t focus on the tribe of minions that eventually meets Gru, but instead focuses on another tribe who finds themselves in Hollywood in the 1920s. It is such a mindless side quest movie, and really requires you to have a love for the minion characters themselves in order to fully enjoy the shenanigans that goes on. Pros: I loved the orange blob creature “Irene” that appeared at the end of the movie. That monster was genuinely intimidating and made for an intense climax as an opponent for the minions to defeat. Also, I liked all the references and cameos to all the well-known Hollywood movies, characters, and classic monsters. It was fun to see which would pop up throughout the movie. Finally, I liked the twist at the end where it is revealed that Goomi is trying to take over the world, not actually help the minions make a movie. While the twist was kinda obvious, it does make for an interesting turn of events for the minions to confront and solve.
