Sometimes Guest’s films stray into snobbery against flyover country, but Mascots mostly avoids that. It hides its toxic warfare under a furry guise.

This was a lovely little movie, depicting the over-the-top indulgence of team mascots. It kind of reminded me of the move "Best In Show" about the fanatical lives of show-dog owners and their competitive streaks. This movie was funny and entertaining. Parker Posey was absolutely delightful especially in the scene where she almost got disqualified from the show through no fault of her own. See this one if you want a smile on your face all through the movie.

There are plenty of solid laughs in Mascots — everything from jokes about furries to throwaway bits involving obscure cable channels — but what’s disappointing is that there’s not a great overr-iding idea that ties all the gags together.

This is the fourth instalment in the Guest mockumentary 'canon' and it's evidence that the format has now solidified into a template that needs refreshing, as much gentle enjoyment as it might bring.

The only thing Mascots has to be is laugh-out-loud funny, and yet, most of the time, the only things it elicits are reflexive chuckles and a sense of creeping boredom.

It lopes along, merrily but a bit slack, always reminding you of the earlier Guest films, and then it works up a bit of a fizz in the competition.

Honestly, this isn't the best Christopher Guest film but it does have a lot of heart, humour and is original in its own way. Some of the characters are indeed under-developed and perhaps it could have fared better as a TV show but I still did enjoy watching.

Probably Guest's worst movie. A format that is starting to look pretty tired and needs a shake up. Shame.

Most of the dialogue and overall writing in Mascots feel forced and artificial, as opposed to other Chris Guest films like Waiting For Guffman, Best in Show and A Mighty Wind, where those important parts of the film come off much more natural and genuine. There are some funny moments scattered throughout Mascots, and some of the performances are pulled off nicely (Parker Posey), but overall this formulaic Chirs Guest mocumentary is mediocre at best.
