Lisa Frankenstein feels like the kind of movie that could have come out in the 80s, something Tim Burton might have directed with Johnny Depp playing the Creature, the difference is, i honestly believe that version would have been a much better film to make, tell, and watch, Zelda Williams is clearly trying her best to capture that quirky gothic vibe, but almost none of it really works from a story or character perspective. The performances themselves aren't terrible, they're fine, and some of the style i actually quite enjoy, but i never really connected with the story or the characters, Lisa shift from a grieving girl into someone who is suddenly comfortable with murder is handled very poorly, it happens so quickly that it doesn't feel believable at all. And once those really important aspect fails to land, it creates boredom, and the rest of my experience with Lisa Frankenstein is simply boring and just unnatractive, there's a hint of potential in the concept and style, but unfortunately the film stumbles and never fully brings those ideas to life.

Lisa Frankenstein feels like a side character's plot in a larger TV series stitched together. Frankenstein's monster is stitched together better than this plot. Character development feels extremely rushed with the rapidly developing personas of the core cast, leaving the audience unable to connect to any character meaningfully. Though the film is aesthetically pleasing, and does very well to represent the vibrant colours of the 80s, with Lisa in particular presenting very strong wardrobe choices, the merits of the film sadly end there. Attempts at comedy often fall flat, and will get you to smirk at best. Any sympathy or connection you have for Lisa (Kathryn Newton) is thrown out the window with the wacky decision making and logic leaps the character makes. Culminating to awkward send-offs with other actors that leaves you feeling uneasy or disgusted. Lisa Frankenstein will surely satisfy a very niche audience, but will likely fall flat for the wider audience.

A modern retelling of a classic tale - except this time, it's set in the 1980s, mixed with a similar world that would make fans of The Breakfast Club, and fans of the teenage wasteland genre, quite happy. Lisa, Frankenstein does offer some quick laughs while balancing a horror-type style.

Really only worth watching for the actress Kathryn Newton , she was a joy to watch! Also seeing Cole Sprue in more movies is neat. The overall premise of the movie is cool but muddled down by weird dialogue & gross scenes. An ok movie.

'Edward Scissorhands' meets 'Swiss Army Man,' starring Chappell Roan. A very derivative film with little funny moments and a lackluster story. Diablo Cody remains a one-hit wonder.

This film was an attempt to blend eighties nostalgia with gothic horror and teen rom-com, but it floundered due to unlikeable lead characters and a weak plot. I watched some music videos on MTV with more dramatic heft and satisfactory storytelling.

Lisa Frankenstein is a very unique horror comedy that I loved watching! The movie is funny, features fantastic performances from the entire cast, and is surprisingly violent for a PG-13 movie! The romance aspect of very compelling and the 80s setting feels authentic, making it feel like a movie that could have come out in the 80s!

Filled with cliches and many predictable moments, Lisa Frankenstein is a poorly written mess that struggles greatly with indecisiveness. It simply can not decide what genre is whats to be. Instead, Diablo Cody dips her toes into horror and comedy and neither one works.

Amazing film, literal art. If you want a linear, structured narrative like you're living in the 90s, this might not be satisfactory. If you're living in 2024 with the rest of us, this will scratch itches you didn't even know you had.

"Lisa Frankenstein," directed by Zelda Williams, remixes the Frankenstein tale with influences from John Hughes, Tim Burton, and 2000s Hot Topic culture, set to an '80s soundtrack. Written by Diablo Cody, it parallels her work on "Jennifer's Body," exploring teenage angst through horror. The story follows Lisa Swallows (Kathryn Newton) who magically revives a Victorian poet (Cole Sprouse), leading to comedic horror. The film shines with strong performances, especially from Sprouse and Newton, and a memorable supporting cast. Williams’ direction captures an authentic '80s vibe, though the film struggles with tonal consistency. It's a promising debut that refreshingly revisits its classic origins.

A Difficult one to rate...I wouldn't recommend this movie to anyone unless you are weird, I mean weird in the least possible way. This is not a Horror movie, but it does pertain to elements of comedy and romance. So it's a mixed bag, 4/10, some may like it, and others may not. I will find it to be forgettable... Universal is putting out some low-to-mid movies. I feel like the potential of this movie was just cut and lost for some reason.

Horror-Comedy (not the opposite) directed by Zelda Willians in her full feature film, and written by Diablo Cody (Juno, Jennifer's Body) that tells the story **** stricken teenager who had her mother slaughtered, and lives now with an abusive mother-in-law and a lovely sister-in-law.Kathryn Newton as Lisa is perfect for her role.Stigmatized by her past and actions the is the black swan of the school, and passes a lot of time in a old cemetery (watch the credits animation closely) of the 19th century on a tomb of another teenager that died with a green lighting into **** movie emulates the 80's teenage romance-comedies (it passes in 89), in a light way till a certain previsible point - for sure it isn't as sugary as you may think to those who wonder. And have an unsuspected ending. I think it was worth for some laughs on a weekend night - I score it 6,6 out of 10,0 / B for the fun.

This movie was cute, but it wasn't something I'd call particularly scary. It is kind of gory and there are some very suggestive scenes in it as well but it's a fun horror dramedy with some moments of levity that my teenage son and adult daughter both enjoyed. This isn't a Disney level horror like Halloweentown but not quite as adulterated as something like Jennifer's Body or even scarier and darker movies such as Evil Dead but it's a good movie for people who like somewhat gory horror that can be enjoyed by many audiences. I think the rating of PG-13 is accurate here because it is a bit much for kids in elementary school but it was still an enjoyable movie that reminded me a bit of the 90s film, 'My Boyfriend's Back' or 2013's 'Warm Bodies' and people who liked those, 'Shaun of the Dead,' and other types of films would likely enjoy Lisa ****'s nice to know it does fall into the Jennifer's Body Universe - though Id like to know more about that tie-in and also to see Zelda Williams; Robin William's daughter in her directorial debut, as well.

Lisa Frankenstein combines the classic elements of gothic horror with teenage struggles. Interesting. Kathryn Newton has an amazing aura. Definitely talented. Yet the movie, even though funny sometimes, is a mid-job for such talent. She could do much better movies.

IN A NUTSHELL: This quirky throwback to 80s horror was directed by Zelda Williams, who is the daughter of actor Robin Williams. This is her directorial debut of a major motion picture. Writing credits go to Diablo Cody, who also co-produced it. The story is about a teenage girl who is willing to murder to bring her corpse crush to life. THINGS I LIKED: Kathryn Newton is fantastic in this role as Lisa Swallows. I’m excited to see what else she can do. Another standout, for me, is Carla Gugino. Other cast members include Cole Sprouse as the Creature, Joe Chrest, and Liza Soberano. During the rolling credits at the beginning of the movie, we’re told a brief backstory in cartoon form to help us understand the current events. The color palette, hairstyles, home décor, music, and clothing instantly take us back to the 1980s. The story also has plenty of 80s tropes as a playful nod to past films. The first dream sequence is super creative. I wanted to see more of that. Fans of dark humor might get a real kick out of this. While the film isn’t perfect, there is definitely an audience for this kind of comedy horror. Fun soundtrack. THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE: There’s a musical number, of sorts, that isn’t very good, yet we see a sweet connection between two characters being made during the song. The tone shifts dramatically from Act 1 to Act 3. Some scenes could have easily been cut to shorten the run time. Several plot points don’t make sense. TIPS FOR PARENTS: Teens drink alcohol and take drugs A character tells Lisa everyone pleasures themselves. We see teens in bed together. Blood splatters and body parts Brutal murders Talk of not wanting to be a virgin and male body parts

10/10 for what it is, not a blockbuster thriller or a stunning drama, it is a story **** dealing with loss and finding love in a grave place. It knows what kind of movie it is and delights in being itself. My girlfriend and I loved it it, but I suspect certain audiences will not be able to appreciate it.

Really cute and unique movie! Had some funny moments, great chemistry between the leads and a bit of gore. It’s like a fanfic on the screen, which I love (as an avid reader of them). This is a must watch, especially for the Wattpad/AO3 girlies!! Will definitely re-watch once it’s available to stream

Love the aesthetic and Newton is perfect in the lead role. But there is a disconnect between the humor and relatability of the character when they start murdering people every other scene, especially once it shifts to completely innocent victims.

Diablo Cody is known for writing off-the-wall screenplays and this one certainly qualifies. Kathryn Newton plays a frustrated teen (is there any other kind?) who's obsessed with gravestones. One stormy night her favorite deceased obsession comes alive in the form of a crud-covered man (Cole Sprouse). Thus begins their disjointed love story that also involves collecting body parts to make him whole. This "comedy" has Not. One. Laugh. Newton is OK as the troubled teen, while the grunts from Sprouse add nothing. Zelda Williams has added no suspense, surprises or clever directorial touches, but at least she kept the energy up and the running time short. Even with the twisted variation on the classic monster, the outcome is essentially lifeless.NOTE: In the final scene Williams put the creature in rainbow suspenders as a reference to her dad's Mork & Mindy look.

It’s a cute movie. A bit slight in the plot department but that’s part of the breezy charm when at its best. It’s a bit darker than expected based on ads, but it is a “horror comedy” so it’s got to have some bite to it to fit the bill. I think this movie could improve on repeat viewings. I think some people will really dig it. I’m more middle leaning positive. One thing I do love is seeing a film that is female written, female directed and starring. It’s all too rare, even in this day and age. Spoken as a man, I appreciate seeing films imbued with a female perspective and I wish studios would back more movies like this.

Despite how jarring the film went from pretty absurd and cartoonish to surprisingly sincere, this film was a lot of fun! The trailers for this don’t do what the film is actually about any justice.

There are so many good and fun elements to this film, and the actors (the two leads and the sister) are uniformly outstanding, but something about the directing, the editing, or how the story is told is just lacking. It needed a few more cracks at the script, perhaps. Also, maybe add a score? Too many moments of quiet nothingness, especially in the first half. Wanted to like this much more than I did.

It’s fun! A bit messy and the rules don’t always make sense, but Newton is a hoot. I’m sure this will be a sleepover staple for years to come.
