Joker: Folie à Deux

To repeat, Folie à Deux is not “canon.” It’s a writer/director realizing a vision with something sincere and clever, which you can accept or reject. Superhero fans will get their fix soon enough. But this is not that.

So who’s up for a strange, disarming musical? As much as I hated the first one, this one works for me.

While the title seems to promise a dual focus and fresh blood in the form of Gaga’s Lee Quinzel, in practice, she is very much a secondary character who earns next to no screen time on her own and suffers from thin writing and cursory characterisation. It’s a testament to Gaga’s weapons-grade charisma and star quality that despite all this, Lee’s scenes are electrifying and she lands every last line like a punch.

Gaga is a compelling live-wire presence, splitting the difference between affinity and obsession, while endearingly giving Arthur a shot of joy and hope that has him singing “When You’re Smiling” on his way to court. Their musical numbers, both duets and solos, have a vitality that the more often dour film desperately needs.

This is a film of half-measures, lacking ambition in a way that is at least mildly more entertaining than its predecessor, but that’s down to the pleasures of songs written half a century ago rather than any talent Phillips has to offer as a filmmaker. Send in the clowns indeed.

If the principal actors weren’t so watchable, the movie would be an outright bore.

What a staggeringly stupid film. Joker: Folie à Deux is a sequel that did not need to exist. It’s an unspeakably self-indulgent, two-hour-plus beast of hodge-podge musical numbers wedged between drab prison and courtroom scenes.

People's expectations always play against their experiences. This movie is art.

In diesem Teil geht es um die Zeit im Knast und das folgende Gerichtsverfahren. Die Geschichte ist mittelmässig mit einigen Ausreissern nach oben. Das ganze Gesinge hilft nicht es besser zu machen.

The story/plot is not good enough. Not enough climax, suspense and thriller. Lead actors did fine acting. Can be skipped unless you're a big fan of Joker.

what the f am i watching...i even have to fast forward the last 1 hour bcos i cant take it anymore. What is this movie trying to convey? its unbearable to watch the full length of it. And all the musical, gosh...waste of time. I bet maybe 5 out of the 1.000 that watched it can actually enjoy this niche.
