As the film builds to its sentimental resolution, it becomes clear that the differences between mother and daughter aren’t issues to be solved, but quirks to be embraced.

These delicate mood-shifts are the film’s strength, sanding over (to an extent) the clunkiness of its themes to achieve a special balance: Honeyjoon is both a mourning movie, and a horny one.

Despite the well-written screenplay, it still takes great skill to navigate the tonal shifts of June and Lela’s relationship, and both women do superb work.

The movie delivers subtext aplenty, overflowing in ways that help overcome its reserved exterior and make for an unobtrusive comedy-drama that, on occasion, comes close to working.
