The film uses a country-mouse-and-city-mouse template to explore morality, aesthetic sense, urban and rural savvy, and a host of other concerns.

Time Out
Suddenly, everything clicks; this snooty art merchant may love the sound of his own voice, but you're reminded how much Rohmer valued the sound of others' voices above all, and why going out on a whimper occasionally works wonders.

A cute suspense between a city mouse and a country mouse. A great lesson where silence fills the void after the boisterous debates of young girls.241119 (4.0)1. Reinette is a bright, proactive painter living in a mysterious old house, while Mirabelle is an ethnology student from Paris who meets her after a bicycle puncture. 2. "L'Heure Bleue"—the one minute of silence before dawn—serves as the central motif, a subject inspired by the nature-driven themes of "The Green Ray." 3. The story follows their four adventures as they become roommates in Paris, influenced by each other's contrasting worldviews. 4. In the second adventure, Reinette’s conscience clanks against a rude waiter, while the pragmatic Mirabelle suggests just walking out on the bill. 5. The third adventure explores moral dilemmas as Reinette loses then regains her faith in humanity through encounters with beggars and scammers. 6. In the final act, the talkative Reinette—who paradoxically claims she was born for the silence of painting—struggles to pay rent after giving her money away. 7. Through a mutual friend, Gontran, they attempt to sell a painting. Mirabelle brilliantly uses "mirroring" to handle a mansplaining gallery owner. 8. A painting worth 1,000 francs ends up selling for 4,000 francs. The lesson about the mystery of the world filling the silence is truly wonderful.

The film is a great exploration of two women and the irony of colloquial speach set in an urban environment. It is split into 4 parts and is an type of art.
