The screenplay, by Matt Lopez, leans bright and broad, but there are sweetly specific moments scattered throughout, from a whisper-fight over dominoes at the local social club to the frequent snatches of Spanish woven into the dialogue.

Seeing successful Latino families in a storyline that has been heretofore just been told from a white perspective is important. But none of that would matter if Father of the Bride wasn’t entertaining. Thankfully, it is. Garcia and Estefan in particular are so at ease in their roles that they invite us to be part of the celebration.

I found it charming and resonant enough to earn its ending and feel good aspects.

Latina in MIA...wokeness for PC doesn't translate (pun unintended) too good. As a film buff how can you top Spencer Tracey and Elizabeth Taylor.

It’s surely a crowded canvas. But Alazraki and Lopez joyously melt all the ingredients into a hearty hotpot of generational clash, cultural conflict, patriarchal one-upmanship and domestic chaos, allowing the uniqueness of both the Cuban and Mexican cultures to shine through in their Latinx tapestry, rendered through production designer Kim Jennings’ sumptuous sets.

There’s way more plot to this “Father of the Bride” than necessary. But the unique cultural details add fresh flavor; and the big emotional buttons at the movie’s end are as effective as ever. Like a wedding itself, all the stress and irritation pays off in a pleasant way to spend a couple of hours.

There’s nothing particularly remarkable about Father of the Bride 2022 (was there ever really going to be?) but it’s a far better, and smoother, film than one would expect from the outset, a streaming premiere made with such confidence that it surely deserved a big-screen run.

While many of the film’s beats are familiar, director Gary Alazraki’s version of this classic family comedy often misses one essential ingredient: real humor.

This remake is loud and exaggerated; it’s more hijinks than heart. (Even the swans that bedeviled Martin have been swapped out for synchronized flamingos.) Audiences looking to shed a tear need not RSVP.

Designed for Latino audiences and to some extent for modern audiences.
The exaggeration of its representation is the clearest example of this.
I don't really see it as a bad thing, but it doesn't really add anything significant to the mix either. Perhaps for those interested in this take of this story, and I think mostly for those who have never seen the Spencer Tracy and Steve Martin versions, this film will seem sufficiently relevant, and more than anything else, they will get the light comedy I think they are hoping for, but since those versions already exist and I personally think they are much better, given the situation, this one wouldn't even get into the conversation. I will never tell you not to watch something, because your opinion is what counts more than anything else, but I really believe you won't miss a thing if you just let it slide.

I kinda don't like how they try to portray the father as some sort of unreasonable "bigot", while at the same time making it appear as if the failing in his marriage, is all his fault, and has nothing to do with the wife. He literally states to his counselor "that he is here", meaning that he wants sustain his marriage, while the his wife blatantly says no. He complaints where so petty, simply because he has hobbies, complaining that he also works all the time, meanwhile, atleast how the film portrays it, she doesn't seem to work at all. Meaning that the husband is the sole bread winner.

Another ruined remake that misses out on all the wonderful things that established the magic of the originals
