Encanto

In a movie as visually stunning as Encanto, it’s the depth of its empathy that might be its most miraculous feature.

Encanto is a vibrant, visual delight that’s just as magical as the family at its center.

Encanto has a few nifty plot pivots and surprising reveals, but it’s the animation itself that steals the show.

Vibrant visuals, a stack of stellar songs, and a story with real heart make for another Disney banger. Sixty films in, the Mouse House still has that magic.

While the narrative doesn’t totally land, the voice cast is solid and the vibe is consistently joyous.

Encanto takes on a complicated, mature topic—multigenerational family dysfunction—and dramatizes it in ways that are simultaneously literal and metaphorical, which is something only the best of Pixar usually manages to pull off. Here, the result is at once limited and meandering, underexplored and overstuffed.

There are some nice moments and sweet showtunes, but Encanto feels like it is aspiring to exactly that sort of bland frictionless perfection that the film itselfis solemnly preaching against, with a contrived storyline which wants to have its metaphorical cake and eat it.

A near perfect film, great in almost every aspect. Enjoyable for both kids and adults.

Encanto **** as*! It is so…shallow. Not to mention that half of it doesn’t make sense. Some of the characters have character flaws amped up to 11 so forgiving them is impossible. I will give credit where credit is due though. The soundtrack for this movie is generally good. Some songs are great, but most are just catchy. I feel that you have to be a real music nerd to enjoy most of this movie. Which I am not. Much prefer Coco. But again, Disney went to new heights for the music. Some of which, like Surface Pressure, was a little too poppy for me. But either way, they went all in on the music and it payed off well. The music was what kept me watching the movie and is the only reason I didn’t give Encanto a 1. The animation and overall appearance of the movie was incredible. And the environments were so well crafted.
