Easy's Waltz

Movies like this don’t exactly light up the box office, but they stick with the folks fortunate enough to see them.

Vaughn pours himself into the role, but he also seems to understand that going big and broad for this one is a misstep. Easy isn’t a caricature, even if the people and events around him increasingly feel that way.

If one (somehow) completely ignores the utter ridiculousness of a musical performance anchored with mediocre singing (insert snarky Russel Crowe-related comments here, if you’d like), there’s still a lot of fun to be had from the film.

Easy’s Waltz is a harmless, fleeting curio, a piece of ephemera that lilts by like a song that isn’t quite catchy enough to get stuck in your head — it has the decency to do its thing and then leave us alone.

Taking the guise of a downbeat New Hollywood character drama you’d get from Bob Rafelson or John Cassavetes to unintentionally hilarious ends, the film at least bears enough eccentricities to be a more pleasurable sit than most bigger-budgeted studio slop.
