The mind behind TV’s Hannibal and Pushing Daisies makes his feature directorial debut with Dust Bunny, a wonderfully strange mix of murder, mayhem, and childhood monsters-under-the-bed.

Blending horror and humor, sweetness and scares, and fantasy and family melodrama, it shoots for the moon—and, more often than not, scores a bullseye.

What a wonderful movie! Someone else mentioned it has a Roald Dahl feel to it and I wholeheartedly agree. Not too often you are fully entertained by a show that handles; fantasy, comedy, drama, horror all wrapped around a cohesive story where you care about the main characters. Many threads in this that follow throughout the story - lines that are hilarious such as throughout Mads Milkensen's character (we are never given a name) continues to call the little girl "Erora" when her name is Aurora. Never is a chance missed for this but what makes it work is Aurora is always immediately ready to correct him - as if expecting him to call her Erora... no question its a game they are playing. Aurora's monster under the bed is genuinely scary which really balances the rest of the fantastical feel. We are given threads of Aurora's backstory as the show progresses and it comes together in a very satisfying way. Likewise for Mads Milkensen's "Intriguing neighbor" who is a hitman whose humanity is awakened by Aurora... great relationship that just works. Other than having to look at whatever it is was done to Sigourney Weaver's face - she is always good. Just a great - entertaining and very very worthwhile watch!

What a great movie. Nice and strange. Likable characters, a plot you can follow, fantastic set design, and some good, fun monster action. Skip the blockbuster you were gonna see, and see this instead.

Fuller is in fine form with Dust Bunny, and with its goofy tone, and its unabashedly maximalist elements navigating between more subtle character beats, there’s a plenty to admire about this feature film debut from a well-established storyteller.

Toning down the blood-drenched viscera of Hannibal while channeling the morbid yet whimsical stylings of Pushing Daisies, Fuller’s inaugural film effort is completely in tune with his previous narrative interests, though this time filtered through the gaze of a precocious child.

For all its filmic flourishes, this a sweet film at its heart, one interested in the darker side of childhood, not just the fears we have as children, but the anger as well.

In its strange and successful mixing of genres, Dust Bunny is arguably everything that Mockingbird Lane, Fuller’s misguided attempt at an edgy take on The Munsters, was not.

The film’s writing is the sort that begs you to find it cute and quirky, which makes it quite grating if you don’t.

Amusing, both a whimsical, horror/comedy. Innovative and creative, with unusual elemnets in a very Wes Anderson setting and style.

Not really horror at all but closer to kids/YA fare; think Roald Dahl. For such a lean film, the plot was a little difficult to follow at times. But very enjoyable and has just the right amount of stylization to set the proceedings.

Bryan Fuller created the unique TV series “Pushing Daisies,” so his take on a thriller is also expectedly distinctive. He also created “Hannibal” so he’s comfortable in this genre. Sophie Sloan plays a girl who has a giant, lethal rabbit under her bed. She enlists the help of a hitman neighbor (Mads Mikkelsen) to help her eliminate it. This isn’t a typical horror film, as a matter of fact, it’s not one. It’s dark fantasy with a somber stylized look that's often beautiful. In some ways, it reminds me of Wes Anderson, in its formal approach and idiosyncratic flair. The extended dialogue scenes drag down the pace, but there are many scenes with no talking. Yes, there are some violent kills, but they're often off camera or so quickly staged that it's not horrofying. Ultimately, it’s a bit sweet and never scary. BTW, Sigourney Weaver seems to be enjoying her evil character.

Dust Bunny lands somewhere in the realm of mild intrigue but never fully commits to its potential. In a landscape saturated with formulaic releases, the film at least attempts to carve out its own identity, even if the execution doesn’t always match the ambition. Sophie Solan delivers a commendable performance as Aurora, bringing a level of sincerity that occasionally elevates the material. That said, the film’s R rating feels largely unwarranted; with a more restrained approach, it could have easily functioned within a PG framework without sacrificing its core narrative. While it doesn’t quite leave a lasting impression, Dust Bunny serves as a passable, low-stakes watch—best suited for a casual viewing with family, provided there’s some parental discretion.
