Don’t Say Good Luck earns its tissue-box crescendo, not by torturing its audience with the mom’s declining health and death, but by following a teenager’s realization that life is not always a given.

Coming-of-age films with variations of these characters and dynamics come around pretty often; rather more unusual are those written and played with this degree of care and compassion.

A beautiful movie that will make you laugh, cry and call your mother. A remarkable story from a talented team; the writing stands out in particular.

If this school drama has any charm, it’s because it managed to feel as close to real life as possible, cleverly weaving in a family drama. Perfect for a weekend watch.

Don't Say Good Luck defies the streaming dramedy odds, as hyperbolic as that may sound, by presenting a narrative that is sincerely touching and surprisingly inventive, rather than becoming yet another watch-and-forget, rinse-and-repeat addition to the larger genre. And it has to be said: Sunny Sandler is truly a marvel.

This is complex material, handled with love, and that care could only come from a truly talented and tuned-in array of creatives. This is, then, a great compliment: this is a nice film, about a nice kid and a nice family and some terrifyingly common issues. More of that, please.

Sandler is sweetly attuned to Sophie, a sometimes tentative teenager. And Lynskey strikes a believable balance as both a fighter and a woman tired of the fight.

Does Don’t Say Good Luck skirt around the grim realities of cancer as cavalierly as it paints a Pinterest mood-board vision of high school? Absolutely. But that doesn’t mean the message and the feelings (yes, you absolutely will cry) are not just as authentic. Love is the root of much pain, but it’s also what conquers it in the end.

This is Sunny Sandlers finest hour of her young career, Don’t Say Good Luck is a remarkably heartbreaking but disarmingly heartfelt dramedy that ventures a bit too much into the tropes of coming age stories but finds its way to an immensely satisfying and tearjerking conclusion

Don’t Say Good Luck could easily have been a fairly conventional teenage film. High school, friendships, insecurities, auditions, rehearsals and a musical that, for everyone involved, seems like the most important event in the world. For quite a while, Julia Hart allows the film to exist entirely within that **** that is a good decision.Because it works. There is something recognizable about this small school universe where getting a role, making a mistake in front of everyone or feeling left out can suddenly seem enormous. The film never looks down on its teenage characters or treats their concerns as trivial simply because an adult viewer knows that much bigger problems exist. Then those problems **** the film **** suddenly, but gradually. Family life begins to occupy more and more space, and everything that once seemed huge at school is forced to coexist with something far harder to process. That transition is probably one of the things Don’t Say Good Luck handles best: it does not abandon one film to begin another. It allows both to exist at the same **** musical is still **** friends are still there.Adolescence does not stop simply because pain has entered the **** that is precisely why it works.Sunny Sandler surprised me. At first she almost feels like another piece of the school ensemble, but her importance grows alongside the emotional weight of the story. I do not think she is a bad actress at all. There are moments when her relative lack of experience can still be felt, but there is also a natural quality that suits the character very well. More importantly, when the film begins asking more from her, she **** then there is Melanie **** brings another dimension entirely. Her character could easily have become an obvious device designed to generate emotion, but Lynskey gives her enormous humanity. She never needs to turn every scene into a dramatic showcase. Sometimes a look, a conversation or the attempt to preserve a normality that is already beginning to crack is **** relationship between the two eventually becomes the true heart of the film. That does not mean Don’t Say Good Luck is afraid of emotion. Quite the opposite. It knows exactly where it is going, and at times it pushes very deliberately. It could certainly be accused of trying hard to make us emotional, and that criticism would not be entirely **** there is a difference between manipulation and first creating characters we genuinely care about. Here, for the most part, the emotion feels earned.I also like that the high school and the musical are not simply youthful decoration. Theatre matters because it represents a place where you can rehearse, repeat, correct mistakes and trust that next time things may go better.Life does not work that **** much of the film’s sadness comes from that contrast. Some developments may be predictable, and occasionally the film makes its emotional intentions a little too obvious. It is not especially risky, nor does it try to reinvent this kind of **** it is very well **** that **** is carefully constructed, knows when to give its characters room, and has two actresses who grow with the demands of the story. Sunny Sandler handles her increasingly central role much better than I expected, while Melanie Lynskey once again shows how good she is at playing characters in whom vulnerability and strength can exist at the same ****’t Say Good Luck begins by looking like a story about teenagers preparing a musical and ends up becoming considerably more than that. It is about discovering that life can suddenly change while everything else, absurdly, keeps going: classes, friends, rehearsals, **** perhaps that is exactly what hurts the most.
