Chun treats the material with a sophistication that brings its pulpy scenario down to earth. Not even Bryan Cranston with a cheap Slavic accent can stop him.

The real revelation is Alice Eve, who gives a strikingly direct and affecting portrait of a woman in a desperate situation. Still, after too many pat plot twists and one nauseatingly slow death, I wished the film surrounding her were a little fresher.

Though entertaining, "Cold Comes the Night" is ultimately forgettable, an afterthought, overly ambitious and failing to make the most of a talented cast.

Chun admirably attempts to make each thriller-y motion mean a little bit more. But oftentimes he fails, and the back half of the movie is filled with perfunctory suspense set pieces, doused in blood and full of trauma, that leave little impact.

While the actor lends his formidable presence to the proceedings, this rote thriller mainly succeeds in squandering his talents.

As the screws turn, and the double crosses begin, the film sinks under the weight of its own ridiculousness. (The ever-reliable Cranston’s thick Euro-villain accent actually turns out to be one of the least ludicrous elements.)

The Breaking Bad star — who looks here not unlike the Heisenberg of last season — can’t buoy material so thin that it would’ve barely supported an episode of "The Killing."

Tze Chun's film exudes no flair in rehashing the violence and suspense of its predictable noir-thriller material.

The only person that comes out victorious here is Alice Eve, as she manages to sell the drama and suspense with her performance, as simple as it may seem. The rest of the plot and even a poor villain played by Bryan Cranston make this film an ineffective, boring and, above all, tension-free experience. Clearly a movie that those involved made to pay the bills.
