Consequence
This is punishing filmmaking, both in its sense of overwhelming despair and in its all-too-physical violence, but what sets Apostle apart from being an especially well-shot exploitation feature is its interest in the ideals behind the violence we perform on one another.

Tantalizingly rich in atmosphere and altogether unhurried in revealing its secrets, the evocatively shot, ultra-widescreen Apostle will eventually veer into dark, mercilessly supernatural territory.

Twisted, bizarre and full of gratifying gore, this movie is bliss to all horror fans. Added to all that, it carries a powerful message. With a pointing production design and a straight forward direction, the movie takes you into the downward spiral of corrupted faith and malignant humanity. If you like horror cinema and arthouse cinema, you will enjoy all 130 minutes of pure agony. A brilliant film.

Apostle is ultimately an absorbing, horrifying movie that’s maybe not as smart as it wants to be. But it is a lot stranger, and more disturbing, than you might expect.

The film introduces interesting themes as though they’ll build to something, only to let them spill out like so much viscera from an especially nasty wound.

Shifting his energies to a Victorian-era island blood cult hasn’t dimmed Evans’ taste for feverish body harm, but it’s more clearly laid bare his narrative shortcomings.

The Grand Guignol factor climbs throughout the final third, but while climactic battles are violent, they never really thrill.

A muddled Wicker Man-inspired horror that has bursts of style, but fails to find depth beneath its blood-spewing surface.

Horror of apostle. Very nice. Give me goosebumps about the bad of the people in the village.

A better than average film. But it would have been good if they'd left out the needless gore and that strange guy who hung around the goddess! Most of the acting was decent enough, although the protagonist was greatly outshone by the antagonists! The story was ok, but had some weird bits that were superfluous and ruined it I felt! Not sure I'd watch it again due to the gore!

This movie dares to be different, and original auteur-driven folk horror is never a bad thing to have more of. However, this one is an uneven experience. There are some unique kill scenes and tense set-pieces, and Dan Stevens going full weird is always welcome, but the story meanders at times and not everything that happens always makes sense. Beautiful, thought-provoking ending though.

This is not a fun film. It is nasty throughout. The production value is very high, it looks and sounds great. Letting it down is the concept, the bad writing and the boring arrogant directing. There was one shot where the camera spins around that must have been done on a technocrane which shows that they spent lots of money on it but it really takes away from the scene, they actually made that moment worse by using a distracting camera move purely for the sake of it. It really bothered me, if you use these cool bits of equipment then have a reason. Anyway the acting and casting are excellent. The genre is hugely inconsistent, it’s mostly a thriller but sometimes it veers heavily into either horror, torture porn and supernatural. The supernatural elements are never addressed or resolved, in a frustratingly similar way that May (2002) dealt with these elements. The ending would have been good if the build up had led to it but it didn’t. I also had a hard time believing that anyone would stay on the island and accept it as a way of life, especially if that had come from somewhere rather than being born into that life. They are complicit in the torture, unfazed, almost enjoying it. The graphic torture porn scenes didn't add anything to the film. They spend a long time setting up some characters and stories but sometimes they introduce a character only to kill them off in the same scene without any real engagement. Hugely disappointing waste of budget and talented cast and crew.
