The opposite of the soulless franchise extension it could've been, A Quiet Place: Day One delivers a prequel that elevates the series to new heights.

If a thriller can make you hold your breath for fear of being eaten by aliens while you’re sitting in the multiplex, it’s working pretty well, and “A Quiet Place: Day One” appropriately kept me in a frozen state, afraid to so much as crinkle a page in my notebook.

While it shares plenty of DNA with the first two films, it has its own distinct character. It's a compelling and moving watch.

Not much of Sam and Eric’s journey is all that compelling, or even makes sense . . . but at least they’re nudged along by Sam’s emotional support cat, easily the cutest MVP (Most Valuable Pet) since Messi the dog from last year’s Anatomy of a Fall.

He escapes the confines of being just a hired gun, but in the case of A Quiet Place: Day One, Sarnoski’s tender, apocalyptic character drama keeps getting interrupted by a bunch of pesky aliens.

As an emotional journey Day One has its moments. For a supposedly scary movie, it's a little bit sloppy.

A Quiet Place: Day One is about a cancer patient in hospice who hopes to die with dignity. Also, there are terrible monsters threatening humanity. What an odd idea for a horror prequel.

Cinematography, visual and practical effects, casting and production value/quality are all very good. The sci fi end of the world genre is over saturated so its tough to stand out against the competition. Most of the story is told through actions rather than words with minimal dialogue thanks to the premise of alien creatures that attack based on sensitivity to sound. The story told here just wasn't as compelling as others in this genre. Its no WWZ or cloverfield. But if youre in the mood, this will entertain you.

Overall, I felt the premise of showing the initial invasion was done better in previous entries. Which makes me wonder what the point of the film is? What are they trying to say? The film is carried by characters however they’re a bit flat. The acting was good, the visuals were great, and the film is competent, but again it has nothing new to say. It felt a bit bland and uneventful for what should be a very chaotic experience.

It's not very good and I say that as a big fan of the first 2 A Quiet Place films. It takes a very cheap approach to horror, most people don't like watching pets being in peril, you can see this as if you type in A Quiet Place: Day One in google, one of the top 5 searches is "does the cat die". It's not scary just uncomfortable to watch. So you don't get a well thought out horror film, just a horror film that relies on putting a cat in peril. It also doesn't tell us anything new about the monsters. If you've seen the trailer with meteors hitting the planet then you've already seen everything new to do with them
