Xevious on 3DS was inevitable. Shame they didn't do anything with it. [Sept 2011, p.77]

3D classics: Xevious is a port of the Arcade/Nintendo Entertainment System/Famicom game of the same name. Xevious consists of a spaceship shoot em' up game where you skilfully dodge projectiles, shoot down enemy crafts and bomb grounded enemy vehicles, buildings and turrets. The main purpose of the game is to survive as long as possible and to score as high as possible in the points category. The game is not easy however, one shot to your craft is enough to take it down and lose a life and you are usually bombarded with a large amount of enemy fire. A high score table and control editing is available in the improved menu interface. There is also an interrupt save feature so you can quit in the middle **** and return to it in the exact location you left off. The 3D effect gives the game a sense of depth and makes it far easier to judge differences from threats in the air and on the ground. If you are a fan of classic spaceship shoot em' ups and/or difficult games, take a look.

For retro gaming fans, this is a classic game that you will want in your collection. for the rest of us, however, it's shallow gameplay shows it's age and though the updated 3d treatment is nice, it isn't enough to save this game from being played mostly once or twice then quickly forgotten. There are some games that are worth bringing back from the annals of history but this one doesn't manage to cut it unless you're a very big fan of retro games.

My only gripe with this game applies to all of the 3D Classics titles, and that's the lack of an online leaderboard.

Xevious may not have absorbed all the conceptual advances of the last three decades, but its appeal, even reduced, remains and, just for that, deserves to be revisited.

Xevious is a true arcade classic, offering a delicate slice of shooting action that will seriously test your gaming skills. The asking price, however, is far too high to fully recommend.

3D Classics: Xevious might have met most gamers' standards ten years ago, but in the age of such incredible classic remakes as Pac-Man Championship Edition DX, Galaga Legions DX, and Space Invaders Infinity Gene, it's hard to be confident that fans wont be disappointed with this minimally enhanced port.

Unless you're some kind of creepy time-rich retro masochist who actually enjoys having to start over from scratch every single time, Xevious is likely to provoke nothing but buyer's remorse.
