9/10 because it's not very replayable due to the slow combat that doesn't reward you with anything substantial. Most enemies can be skipped since the reward is just some garbage equipment that you want to discard anyway. Other than that, Vagrant Story offers excellent cinematics, music, and gameplay with a unique focus on turn based strategic with action combat. The strategy comes from using the right type of weapon for a given enemy, along with utilizing spells, otherwise you will be hitting monsters for 1 damage per hit and get annihilated.

One of the less solid games I ever played. Did it in 2025 out of curiosity and no wonder why it failed. Flawed mechanics make you miss 70% hits, wasting your time. You can chain 8, 9 hits and make 0 damage even with risk zero. It's just not serious, nor respectfull with players' time.

It's large, it's intense, it's huge, and it looks and sounds great. Vagrant Story is a true classic action/RPG in every sense that will hook you in from the start and never let go.

There’s still nothing quite like it. No game is perfect — by design, they are always imperfect. But Vagrant Story comes closer than most. Its narrative, systems, and aesthetics fuse into something seamless, profound, and endlessly compelling. Even today, it remains one of the most fascinating stories told in video games, with direction that elevates it beyond the sum of its parts. Vagrant Story is a unique fusion of action RPG, puzzle-box dungeon crawler, and dark political fantasy — and features my favorite battle system in the genre, rivaling titans like Final Fantasy Tactics, Soulslikes, or Dragon’s Dogma.What makes Vagrant Story so special is that it arrived during the 32-bit era — a time when developers still wanted, and could afford, to reinvent the wheel. Yet it wasn’t just invention for invention’s sake. In many areas, it felt like the next iteration. The music and narrative stand as a continuation — and refinement — of Matsuno’s signature "political fantasy fiction," something that transcends typical game storytelling. The combat system, inspired by Parasite Eve, turns tactical positioning and targeted strikes into a deeply personal rhythm — equal parts cerebral and brutal. One of the things that made me. And I am grateful for that.

If I wasn't afraid of the weight of the statement, I would definitely call this the greatest game ever made. Instead, I'll just say it's quite possibly and probably the greatest.

Besides the sometimes crazy amount of time spent in inventory management, and the distinct lack of non-player characters to interact with and real towns, Vagrant Story is a Top Notch, Grade A, Action RPG.

A great medieval romp that plays just like the espionage thrillers "Syphon Filther 2" or "Metal Gear Solid." It's a welcome reprieve from traditional role playing games like "Secret of Mana."

Due to the initial difficulty and a slight repetitiveness on part of the gameplay, it will make you wonder what the fuss is about, but once you do get in and begin to understand the level of customisation the game allows, it'll have you hooked.

Great game, I've been playing it off and on for years. It wasn't love at first sight, it took me a few days to master the commands and then the perfect story , Vagrant Story began.

I first played Vagrant Story a number of years after its original release and so perhaps my judgement was clouded by more recent games in the RPG genre but I really struggled to get into the games traditional elements.

Just impossible to play. Even if you endured the absurd difficulty, you only play with one character for some reason, which makes it repetitive and boring. I never understood the fame this game has, its barel playable.
