To reiterate what I said at the beginning of this review, though: your mileage on all this will vary depending on how much love you have for cheap-looking adventure games with a very British sense of humour. If you pine for the early ‘90s and wish games like Day of the Tentacle could come back (albeit in a much dumbed-down form), then this may seem like an answer to your prayers. As it stands, though, if you aren’t in that mood, then there’s nothing going on in The Mystery of Woolley Mountain that’s likely to win you over.

The game is cute, funny and genuinely satisfying once you start to put two and two together, combining items and solving puzzles to push the story forward. But the writing really suffers here. It would have been much more enjoyable if dialogue lines weren’t so annoying and expositional. Characters constantly say exactly what they’re doing, and they do it multiple times in a row. The game loses a lot of its comedic charm because it never trusts the player to understand what’s happening, even when it’s extremely straight-forward.

Being a huge fan of point and click adventures such as Monkey island and Simon the sorcerer I loved The Mystery Of Woolley Mountain. With its hilarious characters and great British humour this is up there with the best of them. It has a good storyline, puzzles and brilliant retro references. I hope there's a sequel.

I don’t like point and click adventure games, but I did like The Mystery of Woolley Mountain. It’s easy to see a lot of love and care has been put into this game. The voice acting and humour in the game are fantastic, even if the story looses its way by the end. Puzzles are convoluted enough to be challenging for point and click fans (you maniacs) but if you want to just enjoy the game, there’s a great walkthrough to help you along your way. The Shake the Vessel mini game was frustrating for me, however that might just be a one off thing. Maybe I’m just terrible at video games! Nevertheless, if you’re a fan of the genre you should 100% pick up The Mystery of Woolley Mountain. It’s $12.99 on the Nintendo eshop and I think worth every penny if you’re a point and click fan and like a bit of British comedy!

The Mystery of Woolley Mountain might have more of a low-rent aesthetic that’s more South Park than Monkey Island, but it all ties back into a homemade feel that really sells its quirkiness and sense of personality. Its puzzles can sometimes be so obtuse in their design they verge on the infuriating, but they’re consistently clever and will have you scratching your head throughout. With nods to indie gaming websites, Sinclair ZX Spectrums and other entries in British pop culture, this entertaining little romp offers up a fun – if not wholly original – point-and-click adventure.
