The Legendary Starfy

Nintendo Power
A solid, well-made game that will provide hours of relaxing fun. [July 2009, p.89]

For those looking for another impressive core Nintendo franchise to obsess about for the next few dozen years, Starfy is your man. Combining some of the best elements from games like Kirby, Donkey Kong Country, Little Nemo, and Mario himself, TOSE’s latest offering is a DS gem, and brings about more content and diversity than almost any other sidescroller on the system.
If you can appreciate a unique and silly platforming experience that doesn't take itself too seriously, you'd be hard-pressed to find a more endearing title than The Legendary Starfy.

This game is absolutely incredible, it's stuck with me so much from my childhood that here I am writing a review about it a decade later. As Nintendo games on the DS go, it's a solid 10 in my book (I don't care if my nostalgia bias is showing). I always liked the level design, the characters, the dialogue, Not even mentioning there are times I will be humming songs in this game just throughout the day. The File Select, Transforming into Monstar, and Sad Theme are so good. I was never good at the minigames, but you can't deny the sheer fun that Dumpling Master is; a great little distraction, (I know I would play it after losing to some of the bosses for a bit too long.) If you're a fan of 2D Platformers, interesting story, fun, unique characters, and (slightly) hidden gems, this game will scratch that itch for sure.

The Legendary Starfy does nothing bad, but also does nothing amazing. The platforming is really good but isn't anything special, the what i call "combat...?" is also good but isn't special, you get a spin attack and when your in water you have a dash attack, that's pretty much it. The what i saw as the gimmick to the game is Bunstons abilities, in some levels Bunston will let you either turn into a fire dragon, a seal, a rooster or a ghost, each of which have a special ability. The dragons spits fire, the seal has a powerful water dash attack thing, the rooster wipes out every enemy around you and the ghost let's you avoid things that damage you and move through spikes. Overall Bunstons abilities remind me of a worse but still good version Kirby's copy abilities. The story in my opinion is the most memorable thing about the game, it's not perfect but i found it entertaining. I'm not going to spoil the story because, well i think it's the best part about the game. Overall, The Legendary Starfy is a great game, i know some of what i said weren't the most positive things but i still enjoyed every moment in the game. If you have a DS i honestly think this is a must own, definetly not the best DS game but it was still great overall. I give it a 7.5/10 but since i can't do that here i will just say an 8 because it's definetly better than just a 7. Oh yeah the bosses are fun too.

Not going to lie that this game is actually one of my favorites, it was far from perfect and too easy honestly but when you are a little kid looking for simplicity, this game does it right. This game is a platformer that is based on water **** water levels are the main focus of the game, that's pretty crazy to even think that would work. I just remember playing this game with friends and also enjoying the minigames that they added in. Not the greatest game but it has a nice charm to it. I wouldn't recommend picking it up now since it seems like a game more for little kids

Perhaps this game appeals less to adolescent and adult males than most games do: Starfy is more Kirby than Mario. But it does what it does very well, and I hope that this title is merely the beginning of Starfy's legend in North America.

Even with the cuteness level of The Legendary Starfy approaching eleven, it is not a hard game to recommend to fans of 2D platform games. Kids will absolutely eat up the adventure and there are still plenty of moments for grown-ups to enjoy. If you have been looking for a carefree game to give to youngsters, or even yourself, you will be pleasantly surprised.

Beautiful characters, story, fair difficulty, hard if your going for 100%, but not too hard, wonderful mini-games, loveable characters, this is one of the best ds games of all time!

While the challenge level leaves something to be desired, the good aspects certainly outweigh the bad, and we can only hope that the Western gaming world will continue to see more of Starfy and his outrageous companions in the future.

Cheat Code Central
A solid offering that will be especially appealing for younger players due to its somewhat low level of difficulty.

It doesn't do anything new and it's not exactly challenging, but Starfy is a charming, funny game, and a pleasant enough way to while away a few hours. [Sept 2009, p.68]

The Legendary Starfy never completely shakes the sluggish nature of its initially vanilla gameplay, and the game offers very little challenge for hardened platform veterans, but it's a pleasant romp that continually improves as it progresses.

If you have any experience playing video games, you simply don't need Starfy. If you've been playing as long as I have, you'll recognize the cookie-cutter characters, the attempt at a mascot akin to every game of the early '90s, and will blow through it easily enough... if you don't give up from sheer boredom. If you're just starting out though, it definitely has a place... but this is a Nintendo system, so you know there's better.

This is a great game and Nintendo's best kept secret. I really hope the other 4 get localized or at the very least someone brave soul composes a fan translation. The marine platform concept is a joy and the characters are so fun to follow. The comic book cutscenes were fantastic and gave it a very unique flair. Please go out and support this franchise!

For a Children's game, the legendary Starfy is a great platform that definitely challenged me as a young kid, and is also an enjoyable experience with its smooth graphics and lovely music. I could not recommend this game for older players or an experienced gamer as it is far to easy then. But as a kids game it is worth getting.

For kids I would give this a solid 8, it's easy, colorful, and has an easy to follow story line. For adults, or just experienced gamers, this game is just too easy. I feel like I am playing a game with infinite lives and power ups enabled, I don't think I could die if I tried. And there is too much dialogue.
