This is as fine a[n] homage to one of Sci-fi's great franchises a[s] you can get in an MMO format.
Despite all of these complaints, those hordes of starship captains are quite happy. They may not have many different things to do, and the missions and UI may be rather buggy, but there does seem to be enough content to sustain them - at least until the endgame - and even at its worst that content is knockabout fun with more instant appeal, and more suitability for casual, short-session, low-commitment play than most MMOs.
It is one of the worthier options among the titles which try to compete with WoW, and the one that has convinced us the most to date.

Its certainly playable and star trek fans love this kind of thing. I don't find it particularly interesting or challenging. Seems to me that you can just sort of play it casually out of boredom with your mind on autopilot. If you are trying to be the best or geared up you can donate and buy more nerd junk, guild up to gear up etc. There are far worse games all over the net that charge you monthly, have constant cheating and play or look worse.

So far I've only played the TOS route and it's pretty decent. The missions are kinda one and the same. Enter the ground level, scan stuff, shoot bad guys, talk to people, enter the long space battle, destroy enemy ships, collect your bounty. I don't know if other timelines or factions work differently, but so far it's alright. For a hardcore Trekkie you might enjoy the dialogue or familiar characters/places.

From the few hours I’ve played, I’ve kind of enjoyed my time with STO and will likely return from time the time. It’s a tad clunky, especially ground combat, the graphics aren’t the best, but at this point it’s about 14 year old, so understandable. The monetisation model is where it falls for me, it’s extremely expensive to buy anything remotely “cool” (IE T6 ships) the lifetime sub (I paid £110, during a 50% off sale I think) you get plenty of things, more inventory, credit cap, special captain room in the spacedock, I think you get some officers, talaxian race, Borg race and a few other bits, but most importantly, you get 500 zenny a month (the purchase-able currency) however, you’ll need to save that 500 a month up for around 3-6 years to get the ship packs. And realistically, who knows if it will still be here then. Another issue is the almost mandatory feeling of certain events, they add multiple events together and provide a currency you gain from said events which will be used to get a new ship, but the kicker is, you need to do several weeks of events to earn it, and if you miss one, you’ll not be able to get the ship, and the currency is useless for the next one.

Through my adventure I found several things that I wasn’t a fan of but the things that I did like pretty much overcame the negatives, The folks over at Cryptic obviously put a lot of time and care into creating a wonderfully detailed world and it shows with every explosion, dust storm covered planet, asteroid belt and star cruiser.

Star Trek Online could have been so much better… Unfortunately there are too many areas where the game structure suffers from a certain lack of depth. We would recommend it only to real Trekkies.

A true lifetime subscription game is never **** the ships, all the characters, simply the real Star Trek world

It's simply epic, and every Star Trek fan's heart swells at how many allusions and innuendos have been processed here, as for the sometimes strict Hater comments that exist, you have no idea what kind of heart and soul is put into this.

An undeniably fun space-combat MMO, with the bones of a rich universe but still plenty of catching up to do. [Apr 2010, p.102]

A smattering of memorable moments in 50+ hours of game time simply isn’t good enough for me to be able to recommend Star Trek Online to MMO fans. It’s quite a gorgeous game, but that novelty evaporates, and what’s left is repetitive, and simple in all the wrong parts.

Great potential of the game remains buried and players have to dig deep through many useless ballast. Still, it’s worth digging. [Issue#189]

Ultimately, Star Trek Online's problem is that it doesn't put enough emphasis on its own ground combat abilities. The action feel much better in space, where properly combining a Tachyon Beam and a boost to auxiliary power can result in the swift annihilation of your enemy.

Trek fans are meant to salivate at the sights and sounds of their favorite universe made manifest, like a dog hearing the chime of a chow bell. And publisher Atari is banking on the hope that -- like Pavlov's pups -- consumers will be content with the same ol' kibble day after day. The result is a shallow, poorly paced, and repetitive game that, divorced from its storied source material, wouldn't warrant a second look.

GREATEST FREE TO PLAY GAME EVER! This game has a little bit of everything for everyone and is CONSTANTLY updated with better graphics, better game-play, more story-line, and the list just goes on. There is Action, Adventure, RPG, MMO, FPS, Customization of characters and starships, Ground and Space combat, Single Player or Multiplayer, and literally any other game genre you can imagine is packed into this game! You also don't need to be a Star Trek fan to play, although it helps, as the game starts you off with its own story-line in its own time-frame, a must have for every gamer/gaymer!

I have spent almost three thousand hours in this game. It is a faithful adaptation of the Star Trek universe enriched by voice acting from many of the original actors. The story missions are some of my favorite moments of the game. The developers should be commended for what they have accomplished with limited resources and an aged game engine. The end game content, like many on-line games, is where this game starts to have issues. I last loaded this game up late last year. At that time most of the end game content involved Task Force Operation missions with difficulty levels that went from insulting to impossible unless you were using a min/maxed build and researched the mission in detail before queuing for it. The public queues often had long wait times with high rates of mission failure. The game is free to play but aggressively monetized. The game is pretty, the ships are especially well rendered, but the underlying game mechanics show their age. There are layers of different system mechanics and multiple currencies that do not always integrate well. For maximum enjoyment, I recommend a detailed reading of the game’s online Wiki and learning how to create custom keybind scripts. Doing this made it far more enjoyable for me. Overall I recommend this game for any gamer Star Trek fans or casual MMO players. The story missions are fully enjoyable without spending money. I personally hope to see this setting rebooted sometime in the future with a modern game engine.

The game is fine. I'm not a fan of MMO games in general, and missions seemed to be go to this location, press the action button, repeat. I also don't like that you can't pause the game when life interrupts.

Medicore game with some fun aspects. The space battles are good, but they just can't get the ground right. The AI is replaced by massive amount of HP. This means the enemies are dumb punchbags. I literally fell asleep multiple times while playing PVE. The PVP can be more fun, but hardly no one plays that mode. The foundry can be really fun, but the interface has major issues and it can be hard to find the better stuff. The way PWI manages the game is terrible. The GRIND is awful and the lockbox gamble business is scam.
