Neither particularly exciting nor even safe, Superstars’ greatest Sonic sin is being really quite boring, and not very suited to multiplayer antics at all. [Issue#34, p.70]

Sonic and friends are back in a new 2D adventure to thwart Dr. Robotnik's evil plans in Sonic Superstars! It even has multiplayer options. Is it any good? Read more about it so you can decide for yourself.
Sonic Superstars is a good classic 2D Sonic game that shines especially in its visuals. Stages have a wider array of gimmicks when compared to older 2D Sonic games and boss fights are much more complex. However, the game design can feel unpolished and often doesn’t do a good job in communicating with the player. While the addition of local co-op sounds great on paper, Sonic’s speedy gameplay proves to be a difficult match for it.

A boring, soulless cash grab that’s offensive to Sonic players everywhere. I’ve been with the blue mascot since its inception for the Genesis and was looking forward to this game made by the Sonic mania team (that’s an incredible game) but this game has tedious boss fights, absolutely no audio feedback from the hero, terrible (and I mean TERRIBLE) multiplayer with no explanation on what to do or how to do it, just hard pass on this one. I had it on my back shelf thinking I hadn’t played it and popped it in today just to see that I had beaten the main story (that’s how completely forgettable this game truly is. Sega, do better, don’t offend your fan base with this obvious cash grab that was released as a full priced title. Hard (HARD) pass. Only reason it gets a 2 was because of the great visuals, that’s the only thing this has got going for it because even the audio and music are on the back end. Skip this one at all costs, this is Sonic 4 levels of bad, but not Sonic 06 levels of catastrophe, just plain old forgettable and soulless

This was one of the weaker sonic games levels drag on for too long and some of the bosses were extremely tedious. None of the stages really stood out either compared to sonic mania which even that game had issues for me the levels were better paced in that game and boss fights were faster and more enjoyable. Trips campaign is extremely unfair with enemies everywhere and spikes all over the level. The last couple of bosses are long tedious gauntlets with insta death attacks. Sonic Superstars is a mediocre game that you are better skipping even Forces was more enjoyable. Don't buy this game it's very bad.

At least is not bad but is not really good. Whoever has created the destroy 100 enemies with “character” special ability achievement has passed 11 years in economic downfall. But the game itself is meh. Is not bad is good but I’m not convinced this game is REALLY good. When you stand like 2 cm away from your TV or Monitor you clearly see Sonic is pixelated. However is not a bad game.

There are many hours of play in Sonic Superstars and whether you play mostly single-player like me, or co-op, there is fun for every Sonic fan and I feel the fans will be happy with this one. Even with Super Mario Bros. Wonder around the corner it’s going to be a great gaming holiday season for platformer fans. Sonic Superstars comes highly recommended.

Sonic Superstars is not only one of the greatest tributes to the more classic side of the blue hedgehog, but a game with a character and personality all of its own. A title that feels familiar from the first moment, but that will surprise us as we progress. SEGA proves that there is life for classic Sonic beyond the pixel art style.

If Sonic Superstars is the future of the franchise, then it's bright enough that the blue hedgehog will have to wear shades.

Sonic Superstars shines brightest when it’s sticking to what made the Genesis titles so successful. Running through the levels, launching oneself off spring boards and dashing through loop the loops is just as enjoyable now as it was in the 16-bit days. Cracks in this Chaos Emerald become more apparent with some of the changes. Many of the boss designs are good, but the patterned approach to fighting them can make them excessively drag on. The powers granted by Chaos Emeralds are fun additions, but the overall emphasis on exploration over speed takes away from the core experience of what one expects and loves from a Sonic game, plus the addition of multiplayer is a reminder of why these have traditionally been single player experiences. But criticisms aside it’s still a fun game, and while far from flawless, still a must play for fans of classic Sonic games.

The Enemy
Sonic Superstars embodies the classic 2D Sonic game qualities, which is a commendable feature as it ensures an enjoyable gaming experience. However, this also serves as a point of critique, given the series' frequent reliance on nostalgia in past iterations.

Sonic Superstars started so well and with such potential but quickly fell off a cliff due to its irritating Zone design, forgettable soundtrack and odd aesthetic choices.

This game holds a special place in my heart because it’s a game that my best friend and I play every single Friday. It’s become a tradition at this point. We make chili dogs then play Sonic Superstars!
