Slay the Spire is the very definition of a game that's simple to learn and difficult to master. The core mechanics and gameplay are so easy that anyone can pick it up and have a relatively fun time, but learning how to survive takes time and effort. No matter the level, it remains engaging throughout by making every choice meaningful, and victory is decided by your skill and just a dash of RNG. There are many clones out there, many of which are excellent on their own right, but the original Slay the Spire is still one of the most addictive deck-builders ever made.

Slay the Spire proves that tactical games can glue the player to the chair for long hours without depriving them of mental comfort. At this moment Mega Crit’s debut doesn’t seem to have any competition – neither in the card game genre, nor in the roguelike. [03/2019, p.68]

Deck-building RPG + Roguelike, Slay the Spire is one of the most surprising, deep and engaging game you'll see this year. An absolute must play.

A good roguelike deck-building game that's really fun when you have a good run.

A very well crafted Skinner box that people confuse for a well crafted game. The moment to moment gameplay is alright but “runs” are incredibly poorly balanced. The game only offers the illusion of choice, as you often have 1 good option. There is no way to plan a strategy because you might have a couple great cards with a good synergy early but not a single more afterwards, condemning your deck to be useless against late game foes. So, yeah, STS is a bad game with a few great idea but very efficient at hijacking your addiction mechanisms. If you want an addictive time waster go for it. Otherwise play an actual good game

What you really want to know. Yes, it is better than the first one! I am have so much fun on multiplayer. Playing with friends feels like a co-op board game where the game takes care of all the set up, rules, and card shuffling. And we are just taking down the bad guys!

More than any other deck-builder game available, this is thee one, this is the must-play which may very well break the players who’ve otherwise bounced off of all the rest.

10/10. Slay the Spire is a masterpiece. It is extremely fun, addictive, creative, unique, even revolutionary. It's such a one-of-a-kind game that it created its own genre, with countless copy-cat games trying to capture its magic, but not quite succeeding (although imitation is the sincerest form of flattery). I am not ashamed to say it took me 265 hours to earn 100% of the achievements and beat ascension 20 with all four characters. It was extremely difficult (and admittedly sometimes pushed me to the limit of my sanity), but it was absolutely worth it. I enjoyed every second of it, and I'm looking forward to doing the same with Slay the Spire 2.

A brilliant single-player roguelike with awesome card battles at its core. Individual runs vary massively, resulting in almost endless replayability. There’s only one complaint - random luck plays too big a role in determining your success or failure. Other than that, this is simply a great, serious RPG.

Slay the Spire is one of the most satisfying games I’ve played in recent memory. Laying down a series of cards and watching as they wreaked havoc on enemies made me feel like a strategic mastermind, and that this could be done without spending hundreds of hours building a deck was refreshing. Slay the Spire has spent all its energy in order to firmly sink its claws into me, and I can’t envisage putting this game down for a long time.99

All in all, Slay the Spire is just a brilliant game. It opens its arms to you and holds you close to begin with, then pushes you away and practices throwing cards at you once you have found your footing. It really is a marvel of a genre mash-up and it is thoroughly deserving of your time. Just be prepared to start over and over again – it is a roguelike, after all.

By mixing a card game and rogue-like mechanics, Meg Crit Games made Slay The Spires a very addictive game in which only the graphics are a let-down.

Perhaps the most affirming praise to offer Slay the Spire is that instead of writing about it, I would prefer to be playing it instead. The game has an addictive quality where all the little choices made can pay off in big ways down the road. The combat is straightforward enough for anyone to grasp while also offering incredible depth, and the simple act of deck-building is entertaining in and of itself. Where the game needs to exceed it does so by multiple degrees, more than enough to outweigh the minor quibbles it garners after hours of play. Any opportunity to even try the game should be greeted with enthusiastic expediency.

Slay the Spire is a great **** a point. The problem is that the endgame -- once you have cleared the base quest with all three characters -- is preposterously difficult, even for a Roguelike. In a genre classic such as Hades, the player is rewarded for experimenting with different builds based on drops. In StS, if you don't luck out and get the exact right combination of cards, at exactly the right point in the game, you're totally effed. Enemies are idiotically overpowered, and minor mistakes can be catastrophic. This turns what was an absolutely thrilling and addictive experience into a lame, frustrating grind. Why bother to keep playing if it all comes down to dumb luck? An enormous disappointment. UPDATE: Dropped the score from a 6 to a 4 due to the absurd end-game difficulty. Your capacity to slay the heart has virtually nothing to do with skill, and is entirely based on luck. It is *possible*, but will require you to get every requisite card, in a particular order, while landing only on enemies that it is possible to defeat. The developers ruined an otherwise excellent deck-building experience with ridiculously imbalanced difficulty. A challenge is welcome, but rolling the dice -- which is all that the latter stages of Slay is -- gets very boring very fast.
SummaryWe fused card games and roguelikes together to make the best single player deckbuilder we could. Craft a unique deck, encounter bizarre creatures, discover relics of immense power, and Slay the Spire!
