What an amazing experience this was. The story is written amazingly. The bond between you and your partner is done well. The ending is so emotional and sad. The gameplay, though it's different from how it is from the mainline game, is designed so great and fun. This game is also one of the best looking DS games to ever release. Both in terms of graphics and definitely in terms of art direction. The soundtrack is so amazing. I can't find any OST that I just dislike. I just love the soundtrack. My only issue of this game is when your partner gets low on health or if you turn corners, your partners will leave you and it gets annoying because you need both you and your partner to stay alive to advance dungeons. This could result into going into battles and dying. But besides that, one of the best games I have ever played. I recommend.

This game is pure perfection, the dungeons are incredibly interesting and the story is the best that ever was made in the whole Pokemon franchise.
Most people thought,in 2008/2009 that The Pokémon Company made games for kids,no it's a mistake, they TODAY make game for kids. This is a game for adultes thanks to the topic about death and brotherhood and friendship that there is in this game.

just because IGN doesn't understand it, doesn't make it a bad game. third version or not; Sky is a masterpiece that does everything time and darkness does but far better. there is a reason this game is beloved by fans and STILL lets played and talked about many years later.

Music and story are good, but I couldn't enjoy much of the actual gameplay itself, which I actually normally like dungeon crawler games, but it just doesn't work well here.
It's definitely a game aimed towards younger kids, and I just don't get the charm at this point, and still think it's a little cheesy, but I bet I would feel nostalgic for it had I played it much earlier in life. If you like Pokemon and don't care too much for gameplay compared to story, it's good.

Ignoring explores of darkness and time, this is the game to play if you want to try the mystery dungeon series. The game relies of course around exploring dungeons, fighting and avoiding enemies, managing health, stamina, items and pps. For a kid this is enough, but for grown ups, is more of a "find the path for the next floor". It's not an fps, and there are no explosions, or pretty women so beware for those who cannot stay focused for more than 10 seconds and then complain. The game is CLEARLY aimed at children, but if there were options for a more mature audience it would be great. Some dungeons are very challenging and you must prepare for them, most of them are very quick and can autopilot through them.
The main plot is quite full and rich for a kids game, I remember playing it for the first time when I was 11 and crying to it.
I recently played it again and it's still among the best games pokemon has to offer (along hearthgold/soulsilver, platinum and withe/black). It's very sad to see where this series is today. If they refined some aspects, introduced some more challenges for grown ups, more subplots, in the main story - rather than side missions for some characters - and properly developed the "exploration" in the dungeon, having random events that can truly impact the exploration, rather than trying to find the stairs as quickly as possible, the game could spark some interest and be more appraised. Sadly it will never happen.

The most emotionally gripping narrative in the entire IP is found not within the main series, but a humble spinoff chockfull of content and driven by a masterpiece soundtrack. PMD:Sky renders its original incarnations of Time and Darkness obsolete with an expanded story, and content that builds out its world even after the main campaign has ended. The gameplay, while familiar to those of the series, sparks difficulty not seen in a game rated E for everyone- only for true Explorers.

The only thing that made me finished this game is the story. It is SO amazing that it became one of the games that almost made me cry. Aside from that, the gameplay is pretty mid and repetitive.

Don't listen to the critics on this one, especially if you're a big Pokemon fan or grew up with Pokemon. I love this franchise, but have been disappointed with Game Freak ever since X and Y because, let's be honest, mainline Pokemon games, especially newer ones, have mediocre stories. However, this game's story is beautiful with a lot of layered themes and amazing characters, and it made me so happy that one of my childhood favorite franchises had such a great story that I didn't know about! Only thing is, the game play is an acquired taste, but by the mid to late game, you'll probably enjoy it.

One of my favorite games of all time and my favorite from the whole Pokemon franchise, more than the main titles even.
The music is wonderful, the world/ cut scene design is very vibrant, colorful and full of soul. The characters are all very unique (so much so that I sometimes had to giggle due to their little quirks and interactions), and the story is absolutely beautiful and in-depth; it teaches you about friendship but also betrayal, forgiveness instead of revenge, that some people can change and to never give up. Your partner in the game is very wholesome and has some character development, it's just heartwarming to see. Plus, there are some major plot twists, that definitely weren't predictable at at all. And I love the fact that you're actually playing as a pokemon yourself, the animations are so cute. There are some minigames and sometimes you can get really tactical with the fighting system too, with a broad range of items, attacks and possibilities, as well as different dungeons. I love this game so much! Currently replaying it for the about 5th time at 23 years old, over a decade after I first played it, and still enjoying it so much.

Addictive. Soundtrack & story are good. Improves on Explorers of time. Admittedly, an acquired taste due to the dungeon crawling.

Perhaps one of the most soulful, wholesome games of not only the DS family of consoles, but of gaming as a whole.
Even with some flaws (outdated controls, lack of control in dungeons, and some gameplay features missing from the precious rescue team games), this game ends up being a better Pokemon game than an mainline entry since Emerald.
The story is magnificently told, keeps you on the edge of your seat and escalates brilliantly. The decision to make sure most of the pokemon accompanying you are first evolutions really increases the feeling of being an underdog against these mighty legendaries and being out of your depth in a story about the end of a world. Can recommend to any RPG fan, any Mystery Dungeon fan, and any Pokemon fan.

While the gameplay can be repetitive at times, the catchy music can still entertain you while trying to find the next floor or items or pokemon to recruit. The story in this game is the same level of Final Fantasy story. Full of plot twist, betrayals, and sacrifice. Overall, it's a perfect game for those who loves Pokemon but also loves best-story adventure game. As for repetitiveness, every game can be repetitive after you play it for so long and that's including FPS and Open World game

I am disappointed that most other reviews forget that the Explorers series was meant to be a SPIN-OFF. Nintendo made this game without the expectations of this to live up as much as a mainline game. Also, reviewers like the dude from IGN can't understand that **** isn't directed to an audience like him, he shouldn't expect himself to have a reasonable opinion of why the game is bad (also the review is kinda inaccurate to begin with), and should AT LEAST tried to come up with one. So that's why I tried to make this unbiased review (or as unbiased I can be) by myself. With that being said, admittedly:
1. It doesn't add on a significant amount of new content from Explorers of Time/Darkness. But that's fine since most PKMN games at that time made 'definitive' forms of their games (Yellow, Crystal, Emerald, Platinum), that combines the exclusive content of both games into one, so this is natural for PKMN. So whether or not this game is worth for the extra $6 price difference from Time/Darkness, is up to interpretation. 2. The gameplay is slow and repetitive. I get that this is a hard pill to swallow for PMD fans. Jokes aside, the gameplay is quite sluggish, especially when there's something like a Monster House and everything has to take their turn. Sure the environment, PKMN, traps and context of each dungeon is different, but it doesn't change the fact that it is still just you and your partner well, crawling through a dungeon. Really, if you played any one of the three games (Time, Darkness or Sky), there isn't much reason to play the other two, other than the Special Episodes, which is good as it gives backstory and more character to Bidoof, Team Charm etc from what you'd see in the main story and post game. Of course, the story is well-written, tense and whimsical whenever appropriate. A plot twist that actually surprised me, strong feelings of empathy, trust and hatred is created to every character and a great OST. And the ending of the main story. Heartbreaking yes, but I didn't find myself tearing up I'd have to be revived for video game reasons. Speaking of post-game, it and the Grovyle and Dusknoir SE does well to tie up the looser ends of the main story.
TL;DR, it is a great game, and its value has been well-preserved even until today.

Painful. The story is fine, but it's not as deep or "sad" as the people here and the fans make it out to be. Your partner is honestly more annoying than anything else, being a whiny pushover. You can't even pick what pokémon you want to be. The dialogue sounds like a child wroteit. Gameplay is infuriating. The special episodes are just there. agree with the critics.

The Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games are overhated by many players and do not deserve this criticism. They are some of the best games I've ever played. The beginning asks you questions and makes you feel like you are a Pokémon, and the story is the best in the Pokémon franchise. While the gameplay can be grindy, it remains a favorite of mine since Pokémon is a lovable franchise. These games receive universal acclaim, and I recommend playing them if you dislike one of the new Pokémon games or not a fan of them.

The critics had to have been trolling when they gave the reviews for this game, because this has got to be one of my favourite video games of all time. This game has is all, an unforgettable story, amazing dialogue, fun gameplay. It's a shame that this is one of the more obscure games in the Pokémon franchise.

This game is genuinely amazing and better then red and blue rescue team in like every way. Its at the right level of difficulty, battling is great. The item system is actually good unlike red rescue team. The plot is gripping, the music is great and the characters are charming.
The only criticisms I have is that Aegis Cave is an absolutely asenine dungeon and some of the writing isnt the best. Other then that its phenomanal.

I understand why there are so many bad ratings for this game from professional reviewers, don't get me wrong, but there's just so much more to it than they realized. It's packed full of charm, a near perfect soundtrack, and a riveting gameplay loop. It's perfect for people who love a good, but not excessive grind in their video games. Combine that with the incredible nostalgia of the DS Pokemon Mystery Dungeon titles in general, and the fact that Game Freak and ChunSoft somehow improved from Time and Darkness, and we have a wonderful game on our hands.

This game's critic scores are the biggest injustice in media reviewing history. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Sky is a game like no other, with truckloads of content, amazing gameplay, a wonderful story, and timeless visuals. The Roguelike dungeon crawling might seem repetitive, but the jobs that increase your exploration rank and the wide array of recruitable Pokemon will keep you coming back well after you've finished the game. The different dungeons also offer a good degree of challenge, especially the ones late in the story and in the post-game. The story is gripping and builds itself up rather than dropping all the action right at the end, with memorable characters and a great soundtrack. If you ever get the chance to play this game, I can't recommend it enough

Story is fine, music is spectacular, but the gameplay is complete garbage and the higher difficulty of this game forced me to cope with it. This game was more annoying than fun to play through as the sheer amount of RNG elements they had made mainline games look RNG-free and all you do is traverse through a repetitive cycle of dungeons hoping you don't get screwed over by odds. This can be made easier by grinding for items and chucking them around but it eventually feels scummy to do so, especially against bosses. I did not enjoy the Primal Dialga fight because it stomped me like 15 times over when I was itemless and I had to go though ~150 floors only to beat it by hoping the moves it used weren't Roar of Time, and I did not enjoy the Darkrai fight because I learned how items worked and used it to cheese Darkrai extremely hard, while the only alternative was either losing to Ominous Wind or hoping it would not use the move. These are just a few examples out of the whole and probably not even the worst of them, but all in all, this game caused me to dislike Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games as a whole and I completely agree with the critics.

It barely attempts to improve the terribly repetitive exploration loop with only a few, meagre new features, once again leaving only the survival mechanics and rewarding strategy to engage the player, although the challenge is noticeably less thrilling than the previous game's. The story remains simplistic but improved drastically, as a cast of endearing characters unravels the mysteries behind an artistically vibrant, whimsical world balancing nicely humour, heartfelt emotion and dramatic pathos.
