A lot of management titles can have a sort of Excellian abstractness to them — a whiff of spreadsheet seeping out around their ostensible settings. Not so with News Tower. No, it evokes the golden age of paper news across its entire mechanical suite, bolstered further by an absolutely wonderful, period-appropriate live jazz soundtrack from Dutch ensemble New Cool Collective. To quote legendary schlock-peddler, Xanadu denizen, and all around freak William Randolph Hearst — it’s immersive as hell. And from me? It’s an enthusiastic recommend.

News Tower is a satisfying business management simulation that involves optimizing offices and reporting procedures to ensure success. It feels like there’s are opportunities to keep investing and growing. It can even be so satisfying that it stays compelling for hours. There are some minor issues and sometimes it might feel a bit too easy or routine when you get used to things, but I still very much recommend it.

News Tower is an original addition to the management genre, full of atmosphere and surprisingly addictive. Dutch developer Sparrow Night has made a clever debut with this game. Be prepared for some red numbers in the beginning, because the entry threshold is quite high. Apparently, it's not as easy as we thought to create a high-quality, profitable newspaper. Respect for our bosses.

Great tycoon! A must for every management game fan, beautiful 2D graphics and intricate animations (thank heavens it's not pixel art, we have too much of that in indie games), memorable but repetitive music, there are just a couple of wonderful jazz tracks that you'll be destined to listen over and over again. Overall game is super great for one playthrough though you'd probably not want to re-play it because it lacks purpose and creativity options run out quickly. Setting is 1930s News York, you inherit a newspaper company building in bad shape after your uncle made debts to local mobs and fled the country or something. Now you need to re-vitalize business by acquiring new subscribers across New York map. In terms of gameplay you only manage your one building, by adding floors, furniture, publishing equipment, hiring staff etc. It is minimal but very pleasant (I bet this game would look good on Android if interface is adapted properly). The only thing that seriously lacks is motivation, this game has no proper campaign or scenarios - it is basically a map of New York where you need to win the spots by publishing appealing news over and over again. After you reach a certain number of newspaper sales per week, the game congratulates you with a brief popping cracker and fanfare tune, after that it is only up to you whether you want to win all spots on the map. After this point the game won't show you anything new. I kept playing hoping to see some development of the mechanics or maybe some interesting events but no, nothing happened, It felt kinda unrewarding. Another thing I'd like to be fixed is too high decoration items unlock price, in this game you need to unlock new items with Reputation Points, but thing is these points are difficult to gain and you always ending up prioritizing spending them to unlock new equipment to increase productivity. As a result you have poorly decorated building. So yeah, one playthrough till you are congratulated by reaching sales goal is perfectly enough for now.
I really hope they will come up with new DLCs, because the game mechanics and UI are of the highest quality possible.

News Tower, from developer Sparrow Night and publisher Twin Sails Interactive, is a marvelous newspaper sim that goes above and beyond the typical simulator formula.

News Tower is a rare kind of tycoon game, one that puts a lot of care and effort into simulating a very interesting and niche business. While the early game can feel slow and the loop might be repetitive for some, it’s otherwise a fun, detail-oriented simulation game with a decent amount of diversity in its progression systems and overall content, enough to keep you printing papers for hours.

News Tower is a stellar debut and a triumphant return to form for the vertical tycoon genre. Its rich 1930s art deco aesthetic, propelled by wonderful Jazz-Swing scores, underpins a deep, addictive gameplay loop. From optimizing the production line to navigating political factions, this is a meticulously crafted management sim that offers many hours of pure oldschool fun. An excellent example of how Early Access should be done.

News Tower is a tycoon game that puts you in the shoes of a communications magnate running a newspaper in New York’s roaring Thirties. The player is offered countless possibilities: you can choose an editorial line that highlights certain topics, or even try to go where the wind blows by aligning yourself with the interests of the city’s political forces, such as the mayor and organized crime. As in any job, routine eventually starts to weigh on you, and the sense of instability becomes palpable. It’s hard to stay afloat without turning to the banks, which sooner or later will come after you to collect their interest. Worth noting is the excellent historical reconstruction based on real news stories from the months, weeks, and years in which the game is set as a result of Sparrow Night’s careful and elegant research.
