Lucah: Born of a Dream
Lucah: Born of a Dream is a ZX Spectrum-looking, Dark Souls-esque beat-em-up that is visually striking. The beat-em-up elements are strong, though its insistence on sticking to the Dark Souls formula brings the whole experience down, and feels out of place.
Lucah: Born of a Dream takes a unique animation style and tells a deeper story. However, if you suffer from any type of photo-sensitivity, this game should be avoided.
Lucah: Born of a Dream is a neon crash of allusive storytelling, deliberate top-down combat, and distressed, manic ambience. Its indirect means of expression risks losing the player in its internal contradictions—it’s hysterical and tender, it’s demanding and soothing—but tenacious pandemonium is also its objective. Lucah: Born of a Dream seeks an audience that can relate to its world without needing to make explicit sense of its features.

This game is pretty spectacular. The minimalist graphics are far from off putting, in motion they are very fluid and readable. This is a very tight action game, I managed to beat it in a single evening but the game just seems to begin after one lap and indicates tons of replayability. The game is somewhere a mix between a gut wrenching Twine game and a replayable action rpg in the vein of something like Hades, with just as high a skill ceiling. The DLC/The Descent is some of the most intense action from a game I've ever had. I only got halfway through before I had to tap out but the haunting existential narrative and the intensity really left an impact on me. The only thing I can see being a double edge or a turn off is that the game is essentially always a ticking clock. You have a corruption meter that jumps up if you die or enter a super mode. It also increases gradually but consistently as you play. You're not going to have time to do a ton of backtracking in a single lap. The timer however feels pretty organic with the fast paced action combat, the entire game becomes a kind of mad dash interspersed with otherworldly vignettes and interstitial with npc dialogue. The shop keeper is a reference to Mulholland Drive's cowboy scene I think, and woof is it a gut punch to get The Cowboy'd 10/10

Seriously one of my favorite games I've played on switch. Amazingly fun, striking combat that asks you to swap between multiple stances, build up meter for your ranged attacks, swap light an heavy attacks and customize your loadout to an insane degree. It is also such a striking game to look at, and while it may appear at first to be hard to parse, that never gets in the way of enemy attack patterns and animations: somehow, it is always very clear when and what an enemy is going to do. The story is fantastic, we need more **** coded stories in games! My ONLY gripe with this game is it is often hard to make out which characters are which, since the sketchy syle makes everyone kinda look the same. Seriously, BUY THIS GAME

I was expecting a poor game as I saw the poor looking static pictures. I was pretty sure I will hate the game. That it looks even worst then retro. But the true is, that it doesn't look retro. It just looks different. simplistic. psychedelic. The game is a rpg action game. you can level almost everything. can collect things which will help you on your journey. After 35 minutes of gameplay I´m pretty sure I haven't seen much from the game. And I was playing it on the "easy" difficulty. And in the menus, there where "cheats". switches to help your character a LOT. you have a nice portin of different attacs, even has a "pet" which helps you on your way. a robotic pat... I think... anyway. and you can switch between two charachters on the run. each with different options of fighting. Just I´m really sad, its not a multiplayer game. Would be amazing to be able to play this with ma daughter... And I must say it... the way its played its a close system as is the Blade II game released a few days ago. This doesnt look far so "realistic" as Blade II, but plays ten times better!!! I must recommend this one! ****/yPHLsWGIeNw 9/10

We’re aware that screenshots of Lucah: Born of a Dream really don’t do the game justice. That aesthetic is going to put off some potential new players, but look past the purposefully jagged looks and there’s something far more palatable beneath. With its slick and deep combat system and the unashamedly bleak nature of its allegorical story, Lucah uses its visuals to help bolster its unique identity and stand apart amid considerable RPG company on Nintendo Switch. Sure, it can be a little frustrating to navigate in places, but it’s a small price to pay for the elements that shine bright elsewhere in the darkness.

Lucah: Born of a Dream manages to accomplish what few indie games do by being both action-packed and mysteriously engaging.
