I'll start by saying half of this review has to do with how this holds up as a remake of the Xbox original game and the Xbox 360 remaster. I also will explain why I'm still holding onto this game (for now, as of August, 2026) despite me giving this game a 6 out of 10. Starting off with a review of the game on its own. I thought it was alright. I still had fun with it. Despite playing it on PS5 instead of Xbox, I was able to adapt pretty quickly. Some of the controls felt a bit off at first, but I got used to them very fast. The graphics are absolutely beautiful. Very highly detailed and really shows off what Unreal Engine 5 can do in 2026. The music is also decent. I mean there's only so many Halo tracks that are memorable to me personally, but I do like these new remastered tracks. As for the extra content in the game (don't worry, I won't get into politics ****'s just say the new character feels very flat and devoid of much personality. I can see why people didn't like her as much. I didn't absolutely hate her guts with a passion, but I just wasn't a fan of her and I can understand why most players didn't like her. As for the three new missions themselves, they ****. Like many now, it is a bit tiring to hear that MCU type humor used in darn near everything these days. It's alright to hear here and there, but not in every piece of fiction. Anyway, the writing here just doesn't feel like Halo. Humor has worked in the past for Halo, but not the way it's written here. The levels in these missions don't feel too engaging, with the exception of the spaceship part, that was actually fun. Not like VERY fun, but I liked it. As for the main part of the game, I also liked it. I mean if you like the campaign in Halo 1 for the levels, then you should enjoy this one too. I did, at least. Halo 1 hasn't been my favorite Halo game, but it's still a pretty good game and the campaign, despite its problems, is still good. I have heard this game is pretty glitchy, but I personally haven't run into many glitches, none of which made me want to quit the game or anything. Not saying they weren't there, just saying I didn't run into many. It's possible it's because I waited and got this game when it came out physically and there was a patch for the game the day after I got it. Now to address one of the elephants in the room; this is "Campaign Evolved" and not "Combat Evolved" because this game only has Halo 1's campaign and not the competitive multiplayer. There is multiplayer, even up to 4 players (via online for anything beyond 2 player), but it's only co-op for the game. So the very thing Halo is well known for is not in this game. A 2026 remake of just half of the original game. That's like getting a remake of the first Super Monkey Ball game, but doesn't include the mini games (that was the comparison that came to my mind). I know Call of Duty MW2 Remastered also didn't include the multiplayer, but at least that was just $20. I know this is a full blown remake that's longer than CoD campaigns, but $50 is a bit steep for a game that is only one game with a big missing feature, whereas The Master Chief Collection included 4 full campaigns on release (a couple more were added later on) and all of them have the competitive multiplayer. Yeah they weren't remakes, but for $60, that's a darn good deal. It's even cheaper these days on the 2nd hand market. Now to address the other elephant; Halo, the Mario of **** now on PlayStation. I'll get back to that in a bit, but one of the other big problems is the fact that you HAVE to sign into a Microsoft account to play this game. Like you can't even get past the title screen without signing into a Microsoft account. So if you don't already have one; you'll have to take the time to make one just to play this game. Already killing its longevity with that. Overall, I thought this game was fine on its own. But when compared to the original, let alone other Halo games; lack of PVP modes, not even a Fire Fight mode just makes this feel a bit empty and almost pointless. With all that said; the reason I got this game to begin with and why I plan to hold onto my physical copy is for one big reason; the fact that it's an officially released Halo game on PlayStation or just on anything other than Xbox or PC. Not a Fortnite or Helldivers 2 situation, but an actual Halo game on PS5. That's just very wild to me, even more than the other big Microsoft games on non Xbox/PC systems. So if anything, it's kind of a collector's item for me. I don't know if there'll be anymore Halo games on PlayStation, but for now, I'm holding onto this game at least for that reason. As for the game itself, I'd recommend waiting for a sale of some kind, cause while it's thankfully not a fully priced game (for the standard release), $50 is still a bit high for a game like this.

I'm gonna give this a solid 8 out of ten for being a pretty good remaster. Its a much better remaster than the MCC, and it really keeps to the same iconic style as the game always had. it feels incredibly faithful to the original. It does add a little bit here and there in the way of cutscenes and new writing, and it loses a lot of points for that pretty much always being worse than the original. cutscenes have major uncanny valley in the faces, and music audio levels are pretty low by default. It is definitely an inferior copy of a 10/10 game for me, but it is still an admirable attempt and i really enjoyed it

Campaign evolved does more right than it those wrong it’s modernizes a classic experience in a very fun way with an engaging combat loop that while not the same as the originals from 2001 is still undeniable halo. The additions to levels post 343 guilty spark, are genuine improvements from the original. The revamped cutscenes are more often hit than they are miss. And the replacements or both captain keys and Sergeant Johnson do a good job of invoking those original characters while also building more depth into the characters without compromising the original. The prequel missions however, are not as good as the campaign while the missions are still fun and enjoyable. their main problem is that there are only three of them and unfortunately, the cut scenes in those missions and the animations of the battle rifle are very obviously unfinished. The story while serviceable was clearly not written with the mindset that they have only three missions in the game. Unfortunately, the story focuses too much on the ODST and Spartan beef, which while an enjoyable involvements to finally see an aspect of the book canon brought into the games, was not nearly as interesting as the bio engineered monsters created by the prophet of Harmony. There are times where the soundtrack we use of songs from other halo games doesn’t blend as well as those songs were written for very specific scenes and do not carryover to the new scenes of the prequel missions. And the space combat scene is all too short and not full of Mute’s gameplay depth. Overall, the prequel missions seem like a good concept that was simply not given enough time to work on or enough time to develop the story as it could’ve been. In the end campaign evolved is definitely a remake of the original and it was clearly made with a lot of love and care by students. The reuse of infinite assets is a deliberate decision made not out of cost but out of Integra as much as I adore the original art style of the 2001 classic halo has changed in the past 25 years and as fun and it would have been for the remake to have remade those original character models they just then wouldn’t fit in modern halo. Overall, while the original definitely does certain aspects better in how ancient before our architecture is overall for being the first halo experience for PlayStation players and even the first halo experience for New fans of the franchise he keep a pain involved is the second best game they could play after original from 2001.

It was fine. But I find it hard to call a remake and more a overpriced glorified remaster. It looks fine, but somehow feels worse. Sprint lets you run past most enemies rather than fight. Vehicles physics were annoying (flipping because of a pepple in a tank). And enemies felt weird, far too often I saw a grenade phase through an elite, killing a enemy mid grenade throw had the grenade disappear but you'd still get an explosion. Explosion had too big of a explosion radius (but only for the player? maybe just me). Skulls can also break your game (might get patched). Overall, just felt like a waste of time when it felt like it did so little, and that little just made a worse experience. In my opinion, get the original or the anniversary edition with master chief collection, it's better with less bugs and don't need online to play. If you buy it's also cheaper, I've seen the master chief colleciton go for 5$ and its got four games rather than one. This one is overpriced, and for a remake shouldn't have the issues that it has. I didn't care for the additional missions, as the story just didn't interest me. As I felt like we had already done this before. Glad I played through Gamepass and honestly it only succeeded in getting me to play the MasterChief collection again.

People talking about hand holding are sayinng BS! The games just gives a few waypoints in a few places, and they are sometimes very needed to prevent needless backtracking until you realize you're nnot going in the right direction. I played the original, and the second mission was a nightmare to find the three crash places, because everywhere looks the same! So having waypoints and better graphics made it so much easier! But the design of the ships is still the same and sometimes it's very repeated, as it should to keep immersion, so waypoints help! The only real problems of it is the lack of a multiplayer, the online connection and maybe it not being so well optimized, but in fact, this is all something that can be solved! Gameplay-wise, the game is great!

Like it, all the complaining is by nerds. Theve made a classic brilliant and it looks amazing. They should do more games like this instead of making terrible games, remaking old classics and giving them a face-lift is a sure way to get die hard fans on board and excited for future adventures.

Ignore all the overly negative reviews, as they are completely unwarranted. This is a beautiful remake of the original 2001 classic, Halo Combat evolved. It brings a fresh perspective to the series but keeps mainly to the roots of the original. It borrows mechanics from later games and make the original feel new. I have played across PC, Xbox series X and Handheld, having had no issues with performance or any bugs. Really solid effort and look forward to what comes next. The extra missions added as a prequel element are a miss and dont add to the experience. Too repetitive and waves of enemies in my opinion. Somewhat lost when compared to the orignal story. Well worth picking up and adding it to your collection.

Terrible remake. Prequel missions are the worst missions in the entire franchise. Too many bugs in the campaign, terrible enemy A.I.

The writing and delivery of the lines sounds like something I wrote in first grade. The enemy AI is somehow worse than 20 years ago, in an era of AI advancement. Not very repayable as a result.

For what this project set out to achieve, it hits the mark completely. It doesn’t try to bloat the core experience, instead, it refines and honors the source material, delivering a game that stands strong on its own merits while respecting the broader universe. If you want to introduce someone to the Halo universe, playing Reach directly into this version of Combat Evolved is hands-down the definitive narrative pipeline. It eliminates the visual and structural jarring shifts between titles, offering a seamless, lore-accurate transition from the fall of Reach to the arrival at Installation 04. It respects the gravity of the story arc, allowing the emotional weight built up in Reach to carry naturally into Master Chief's initial journey. Much of the backlash surrounding "DEI" misses the point entirely. Judging a title based on external political discourse rather than its actual design, mechanics, and narrative achievements does a disservice to the work itself. When you strip away the noise and evaluate the game on its technical and creative merits, it is a masterclass in modernizing a classic without losing its identity. At its heart, a great Halo game relies on the "30 seconds of fun" formula, and this game nail it. Gunplay, movement, and sandbox encounters feel tight, responsive, and modern while preserving the weight and feel of iconic weapons and enemy AI. The sandbox balance creates a genuinely addictive gameplay loop that makes every firefight feel rewarding. While the single-player/campaign experience is exceptional, expanding the feature set would make it an absolute juggernaut: Firefight: Adding a horde/survival mode would leverage the excellent sandbox mechanics for endless replayability. Multiplayer: A fully integrated suite with classic map layouts and crisp modern netcode would immediately put this back at the top of the competitive shooter landscape. This title is a triumphant, faithful evolution of a legendary story. It nails the fundamentals, fixes narrative friction points, and proves that when developers focus purely on tight mechanics and fun gameplay, the result speaks for itself.

Complete money grab, only thing halo can do is go back and keep making the first three and reach relevant. They have no creative ideas anymore or how to continue a possible story or make a new story in the franchise.

Its Halo 1 with amazing graphics and now run, oh and new weapons from other games, oh and you can steal ghoats now. Oh and 4 player online coop, oh and third person mode,oh and now random weapons throughout the game, ohh and new skulls. Ohh and repeating areas have now been changed to make those levels like the Library not so repetitive,oh and open battles feel like a massive war more than ever now. AMAZING! Negatives Glitches and hiccups Replacing a character here and there from original with females Why? Yes you can kill women, just takes more shots. And sadly no competitive multiplayer. But I knew that one coming in. As the greatest single player experience if my life. This one just got better. Do yourselves a favour and go buy this right now. Dont listen to anyone. Try it on Xbox live digital, you get 2hrs to play before you can get a refund. On PC and Xbox. Make up your own mind

Therte are a lot of Pros and Cons, but I make it short - I had fun with the game and I like the graphics and the gameplay is good. If Cortana looks now the same or not, I don't care. Nothing was disturbing me.

I had to stop playing the game, unfortunately. It feels completely outdated. The graphics are still just another example of the typical Unreal Engine look, with little to set them apart. The vehicle controls are also absolutely dreadful. I find it hard to understand how, after 20 years of established and standardized vehicle handling systems, they still haven’t modernized this aspect.

Feels very soulless from the voice acting to the new gameplay and missions, the actors sound like they went through one take and called it a day, they did needless lore changes and the new missions didn’t do anything for the game, it was bad, the game is also very buggy and not polished, chief also feels like he got downgraded, went from feeling like a bad ass doomguy to just a normal dude, the only improvement was the graphics but even then the ai are dumb on legendary and not much of a threat

How do you **** something up so much. Everything thing about this game is an insult to the original. It's a Frankensteined together mess that was simply made as a project of convience. As someone with ~5,000 hours in Halo:CE don't even waste your time with this game.

It doesnt do anything better than the original. The graphics are overly cartoony and everything has a weird annoying sheen to it. Enemy ai has suffered dramatically and they seemed to try to remedy this by just including more enemies that just sort of stand around and fire at you. The worst part of the game are the bonus prequel missions. The writing is very poor. Who were these for?

From a real Halo fan, I really enjoyed how this remake was made. It's atmospheric and keeps the essence of the OG game. Don't let the frustrated virgins lead your opinion. They are angry because a secondary character is a female. People find tiny problems when they don't have any real ones in their sad lives.

They really cheaped out on this cash grab! This game lags more than any of the first online Halo games did, to the point where the animation looks like rotoscope. And we’re talking about a 25 year old campaign. The state of the industry is a joke. This remake also ruined the traction of the Warthog, making the final escape sequence a nightmare. Also, the game is so tech-bankrupt that your friends can’t join a game at any point. You all have to enter the game at the same time from the main menu. If someone lags out, you have to go back to one of the limited main menu checkpoints to start again to bring your friend back in. Again, they couldn’t figure this out working on an already made game with 25 years of making Halo games under their belt? And then of course there’s the cherry on top: this is the first Halo game with no PVP - a disgusting corpo idea antithetical to the series. The graphics are nice and at least the guns feel right (though, not really when you are drawing them or coming out of a sprint), but we gotta stop buying this slop. The Master Chief Collection was more fun if you have the choice.

A pointless remake. A literal anti-thesis to everything the original combat evolved stood for. Truly a Halo: Campaign Evolutionary Dead End. The Master Chief Collection is the superior product. Better yet,do not waste money on a company that hates you .

Please do not buy this trash its woke slop and they butchered everything about it. Watch a lot of reviews by honest reviewers. The only good scores for this game are from the paid shills lol. Look at the critic scores they're mostly good because they all want to stay on 343s good side so they'll keep getting free codes in the future. The user scores are very accurate do not buy this slop.

why remake halo 1 if u aren't gonna REMAKE halo 1 ? a quick cash grab ai slop game trying to be the remake to the highest rated game in the series and one the most important video games ever made by taking shortcuts and reshaping the experience with no respect to the original game gameplay and style choices under the lie of being "modern", it is not about being modern its cuz the "devs" making this game literally have no idea why people like halo

Absolute garbage. I bought it to play couch coop with my son. Impossible. Constant looping to sign into a Microsoft account which is utter nonsense in the first place. It worked on release a week ago and since then, simply can't get it to work. No easy fix anywhere. Disgusted.

Soulless unnecessary cash grab. Pretty graphics with much more shallow gameplay than the original. AI is a lot dumber and will let you off the hook more often which broke my immersion multiple times. Cringe writing added as well among many other issues. Aside from the graphics, its a downgrade from the original. Just play the MCC collection it plays better, its cheaper and gives you all the other good halo games in addition to Halo CE.

Even though the game was released a bit prematurely and currently has some bugs and technical issues that need fixing, it's still an absolute masterpiece for me. 25 years after the original, this remake brought back all the legendary nostalgic feelings. Objectively it might not be a perfect 10/10 due to the polish required, but subjectively it's the best of the best for me!

The gameplay was decent although I don’t know why it has to come with politics by saying it’s “woke” and it has to do with white trash base that it’s breaking their brains. As a true Halo fan I played Halo 2 when I was a kid. Then later played CE, Halo 3 and reach. Although halo 4 gameplay is ok but I hated Halo 5. Infinite gameplay was good. For me Halo Campaign evolved went both good and bad ways. And the only best mission was actually 343 guilty spark and for my score I give it 7/10.

Halo: Campaign Evolved is widely praised as the ultimate version of the classic because it completely modernizes the original 2001 game using Unreal Engine 5 while expanding the lore with new prequel missions. Unlike previous attempts, this remake stays highly faithful to the dark, moody art direction of the classic game. It blends old-school level design with modern quality-of-life **** community and critics highlight several core reasons why this specific version stands out:1. Striking Visual Reimagining in Unreal Engine 5The move away from the old Slipspace/Blam engines allows for unparalleled lighting, using hardware Lumen ray tracing and mega lights.“Lighting and atmosphere are strong, with darker and moodier environments that feel more closely related to the original's intent.” (Reddit /r/PS5)The improved lighting solves the decades-old issue of navigation, making confusing maps like "The Library" much easier to visually parse.2. Lore Alignment and New MissionsThe story feels much more cohesive with subsequent titles, novels, and animated lore.Three new prequel missions take place a year before the main events, providing extra context.Seamless foreshadowing bridges the gap directly into Halo 2 and Halo **** game adds more screen time for beloved characters like Sergeant Johnson.3. Redesigned and Refined Level LayoutsRather than just slapping on a fresh coat of paint, Halo Studios went back and adjusted actual gameplay maps.“the back half of the game received some pretty extensive redesigns to level design ( The Library is basically a whole new level) and, imo, they're vastly improved for it.” (Reddit /r/halo)The aesthetic shifts heavily following the Flood outbreak, placing visceral bio-growths directly into the map geometry to emphasize the horror elements.4. Modern Mechanics with Legacy OptionsThe pacing is brought up to par with modern shooters without erasing the core "sandbox" identity of the franchise.Gunplay features satisfying adjustments, alongside modern traversal like sprinting and aiming down sights (**** game offers 4-player online co-op for the ultimate squad **** purists, features like sprint can be fully toggled off to ensure a classic feel
