Rogue Mage is an enjoyable card game that I was happy to spend a few evenings with. However, it lacks the greater depth and addictiveness of classic rogue-like titles for prolonged play. As a result, this version of the cards isn't bad, but it's unfortunately the weakest of all on offer. [Issue#321]
GWENT: Rogue Mage is an expansion suited for players who need new challenges, like to test their patience and improvise strategies. But because of a rather repetitive gameplay and disappointing story, it’s a game that casual fans of Gwent can easily skip.
Rogue Mage lacks the scope and ambition of Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales, but despite that provides lots of fun thanks to its addictive, well-balanced gameplay. It’s also a great way to get acquainted with Gwent.

Braindead developers that nowadays adopt the "**** souls" type of gameplay where they assume every gamer has mental damage like the people that play that crap. They make some enemies so bad and strong, literally having a deck perfect for every occasion to lock your best unit, while you need to get that special unit that allows you to select a new card every turn, just to balance out how bad the layout and the other cards are. Some of the choices make no sense. You end up with 50 points ahead just so the fire demon boss can use one last move to wait 70 seconds for the idiotic gameplay to randomly shoot70 times at your cards and you end up losing. Not to mention the game can't even do math properly sometimes, I once clearly had over 94 since one card alone did 92 and the idiotic game showed 94. How can you be so bad at writing code???? CDPR is far from what made them the best with Witcher 1 and 2, they got over their head with the 3rd game which shows on how garbage cyberpunk was. Ruined the original Gwent and all the cards I bought like an idiot, I don't even recognize the game if I try to play it. The game was good why did they change it? I have no **** idea. Removed 3 rows cause 2 are easier for braindead people that throw money at them. Added "complex" mechanics that aren't properly explained just to make it new and get paid salaries for ruining a game every year. So they took all of that and made this game. While it seems fun, you need to cheat alt+f4 20 times a run because the outcome or the game isn't fair. Devs think you will waste 20 **** hours replaying the same **** cause it's RoGuELiKe and you lose to idiotic RNG cause that's what gaming for peasants is nowadays, RNG and no skill. Get better developers or people with actual brains like me.

It's really fun and very cheap. It's a high quality game with great production values. Absolutely worth the price.

While quite different from the previous single-player GWENT experience, GWENT: Rogue Mage is an extremely solid title that masterfully combines mechanics from the card game introduced in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt with roguelike mechanics. With tons of different cards and different strategies, Alzur's search for the mutagens that will create The Witcher is an extremely engaging one, despite the smaller focus on story, compared to other games belonging to the popular series.

Gwent: Rogue Mage is the perfect example of how to reinvent yourself in an effective way. The playing card strategy game from the Witcher saga, even after all this time and variations, is still capable of holding on. A bit of variety in situations and encounters would not have damaged the experience, but the overall result is a well crafted experiment.

A great addition to the Gwent franchise. As always, the art and music are amazing, while the gameplay offers a new approach to the way Gwent is played. Highly recommended.

If you're not tired of seeing Gwent, it offers an enjoyable single player experience. Although its mechanics are not as complex as the original Gwent and Thronebreaker, its more simplified structure works in harmony with the Roguelike genre.

The differences make for a fun single-player experience that fits into the lore of the Witcher world. However, this isn’t the kind of game to play if you are after a fully immersive story. On the contrary, Gwent: Rogue Mage’s story mostly ends with the intro video and flavor voice lines from the two main characters. Now, if you want a game to kill some hours with some fun mechanics and a lot to unlock and learn, then Rogue Mage may be what you’re after.

Without being the most exciting, original or accomplished rogue-like of the genre, Gwent: Rogue Mage nevertheless offers a recipe that works, all in the familiar universe of The Witcher. Players who like the modern recipe of CD Projekt Red's TCG, but prefer to play solo, should enjoy it for a while, especially since its price is really modest. However, the alterations made to the gameplay may put off some players, and it quickly feels like they are doing the same thing over and over again.

Rogue Mage demonstrates why Gwent and roguelikes are not a good combination.

A fun alternative to the multiplayer at a reasonable price with a staple high quality art direction.

Ehhh, this one is disappointing… The 6 rating is based on overall game quality, but I should point out this expansion is at least a 7 and maybe even an 8 if we’re only interested in value for the price point (which is high.) But the gripes are real. First off, if you purchase on GOG, you do NOT get access to mobile play for free—you need to purchase the app separately if you also want to play on your phone. This is **** Second, the possibilities here are largely unrealized. I’m a fan of the general premise, but the gameplay becomes repetitive extremely quickly. There are very few enemies, the narration sounds like some Jim was pulled off the street and given free meteorite powder to be a voice actor for a day, and where I’ve come to expect plenty of subtle little interactions and intricacies from…well, from pre-Cyberpunk CDPR…there are few to be found here. Third, I own all of these cards and most of their “premium” versions in GWENT—WHY do I have to look at the ugly non-premium cards in a single player expansion, when the game could be exponentially nicer to look at? Perhaps I will be milked for extra money in a future “upgrade”… TLDR: Could have been a gem, falls flat, still good value for the price.

I only played 2½ hours (2 runs) and was already bored within the first run. They tried to cheaply copy the system of Slay the Spire but the pacing just doesn't feel right in the Gwent engine. The fact that you always play 1 full round vs any enemy means that there is far less strategy than with multiple rounds. Also, I used to play Gwent a few years ago and I recognized about 90% of the cards and UI from Gwent. So engine, and the majority of assets are simply copy-pasted. Since gameplay and pacing fell completely flat for me I was hoping that the game would make up for it in the story department, we are talking Witcher lore after all. However, there isn't really any story whatsoever, you got 2 mages with voice snippets reading out a generic line every now and then but nothing even remotely comparable to the Witcher or even Thronebreaker. If you played Gwent before, this will be too repetitive. If you have played Slay the Spire before, this will feel inferior, if you played Thronebreaker before, this will feel empty. If you have never played any of the other titles or any competing products, then by all means, give it a shot. It's not a terrible game. It's mediocre all things considered, but I expected far better.
