Ghost of Yōtei is everything a sequel should be. Sucker Punch took the acclaimed foundation of Ghost of Tsushima and built something bigger, more refined, and more daring. Atsu’s story is intense and deeply human, the combat introduces new strategic layers, and the world design is among the most beautiful ever seen in an open-world game. Even with some predictable moments toward the end and a few structural similarities to its predecessor, the overall experience is extraordinary.

Ghost of Yotei is another sequel in the vein of modern Sony titles. While keeping the core foundation intact, the developers made this new entry far richer and more varied than its predecessor. Comparing Atsu and Jin directly doesn’t make much sense — they’re just too different. Personally, I preferred Jin, but the fierce Onryō, with the stubbornness and boldness of a honey badger, turned out to be an interesting character as well.

Five years ago, Ghost of Tsushima pushed the PS4 to its limits and left a lasting impression with its historically inspired open-world epic. Visually, narratively, and in terms of gameplay, this interactive love letter to the work of director Akira Kurosawa, the grand master of the samurai genre, was so good that it rightly earned the status of “classic.” There were some flaws—perhaps inherent to the open-world genre—but the result was an open-world game that you'll happily lose yourself in for 100 hours. For Ghost of Yotei, all of the above still holds true, but you'll want to put 200 hours into it. It sounds disrespectful, but Ghost of Yotei is a sequel by the book and therefore, in essence, more Ghost of Tsushima, but ‘better’: with more weapons, more variety of enemies, and even more beautiful grass – because what an incredibly beautiful game this is.

This game easily has one of my favorite open worlds of all time. It is so easy to get distracted from the main story to do the side content. While the story isn't as good as Tsushima's it makes up for it with a better open world and better combat.

I loves Ghost of Tsushima.
This game is kinda "more of the same" but:
-atsu is not someone I sympathized with
-the vengance theme is not memorable as the theme in GOT
-lots of boring **** much for god's sake!!! and few battle in comparison
-packed with little side quests that are all the sme and super boring
For me is a 6 just because of the beautiful graphics, but I think GOT was way better even though with some defects

Ghost of Tsushima had the bones of a by-the-numbers, crowd pleasing open-world action adventure, interlaced with an ephemeral charm that made the game stick with me, even though I think a 7/10 was an honest rating for it. Whatever that special sauce was, Ghost of Yotei is missing it. The big problem with this game is the combat. The Soulslike combat style has always struggled when you're fighting multiple foes, and GoY prefers fields of 6 or 7 to single opponents. The target lock system is the worst I've ever seen. Even using the optional target lock mode, the camera swings wildly during fights. It became a constant annoyance that Atsu would be mid-combo on one enemy, but another would step just close enough that she'd change her target, mashing uselessly into an aware opponent while the staggered one I'd been trying to kill collected himself and counterattacked. Given the game's emphasis on setting up kill streaks without taking damage, this experience felt unnecessarily punishing, particularly for how common it is. Atsu has more weapons than Jin Sakai did, to her detriment. You'll have more than a dozen by the end of the game, 4 of which use multiple ammo types, each selected by holding a combination of buttons at once. Trying to switch anything but melee weapons mid-fight is needlessly difficult, since you don't have enough fingers to keep blocking and dodging during. This game uses the color-coded block/parry/dodge attacks, this time adding disarming attacks that knock away your equipped weapon. I have to find the game where this feels good, and GoY makes it feel worse than usual. The parry warning in particular is terrible, offset from the actual animation you need to interrupt just far enough to make parries more confusing than ever, while just as punishing as you'd expect. The shinobi, in particular, are a royal pain to fight. And you'll be doing a *lot* of fighting. The stealth mechanics are introduced much later than in GoT, including the ability to listen for enemies. The end result if that you're going to using your katana a lot and your tanto very little until about 2/3 of the way through the game. The story is good enough. There are moments that feel very predictable, but others that caught me by surprise. The key characters are likeable (and the intolerable side character is at least a much smaller presence than Kenji was). Atsu's story is one I've seen told before, but almost always worse than Ghost of Yotei tells it. The hard truth is that the moment-to-moment gameplay of Ghost of Yotei drags it down. I kept waiting for the moment that the combat would click. It never did. It's just cumbersome and frustrating the whole way through. It's hard to recommend a game like that.

Ghost of Yotei excels in design that speaks through experience rather than spectacle, with its flashback system seamlessly connecting story and exploration as it shifts between past and present. The field prioritizes density over sheer size, making even detours feel like an integral part of the world. The narrative, while framed as a single tale of revenge, gains depth from the presence of factions such as the Matsumae clan, the Ainu and the Six of Yotei, giving the stage more weight than the previous installment. While combat is still centered on the sword, Yotei introduces a wider variety of weapons, with mastery sequences that heighten its polish. Rather than finding flaws, one is overwhelmed by its craftsmanship and overall quality.

Ghost of Yotei checks all the boxes, particularly through a main storyline that hooks you from the very first moment and continues to build powerful emotions. Despite being a story of vengeance, its many familiar moments transform it into a deeply human tale, allowing you to connect with the characters on a profound emotional level. Additionally, there's a wealth of secondary content that genuinely adds depth to the world, rather than feeling like mere filler. While Ghost of Yotei has some minor flaws, it is undoubtedly one of the best releases of 2025 and a video game that deserves to be a strong candidate for Game of the Year.

Ghost of Yotei é um excelente game.

Sucker Punch refines and expands on Ghost of Tsushima with a richer story, deeper combat, and a more varied open world, delivering a visually stunning and cinematic experience full of memorable moments and emotional depth, though some camera issues and limited narrative freedom slightly hold it back.

Ghost of Yotei is a visually stunning game, with exciting and addictive gameplay, varied and challenging missions — improving on basically everything that was already pretty good in Ghost of Tsushima. To be perfect, though, I wish that Atsu was ruthless until the end of her journey instead of looking for some kind of redemption.

While I don't think Ghost of Yotei quite reaches the heights of its predecessor, it is another worthwhile trip to a lawless Japan. It sports a tonally distinct and cinematic story, a visually diverse open world chock full of activities, and is another fantastic showcase for the power of the PlayStation 5.

We already knew it from the announcement trailer, and playing it for forty hours only confirmed our first impressions: Ghost of Yotei is exactly what everyone expected from a sequel of this scale, backed by a Sony that needs to strongly focus on some of the trademark elements of its biggest works. Sucker Punch doesn’t try to overdo it, doesn’t attempt the path of innovation, and has no intention of straying from those defining aspects that made *Tsushima* a success far beyond the rosiest expectations. Yotei refines the mechanics, increases variety, enhances attention to detail, and better defines certain narrative dynamics. The result is simply a game that works well and does exactly what it’s supposed to: entertain all those players looking for a new open-world, free-roaming action adventure in which to invest a few dozen hours. Clearly, this isn’t the place to look for a new benchmark or that extra something that boldly sets it apart from any other title in the genre, but five years later, anyone who wants to relive the Tsushima experience will feel right at home here, before the crackling of a warm and reassuring fire.

If you’ve seen one Japanese orphan avenging their parent’s death, have you seen them all? That’s the question that I can’t seem to shake after spending the last few weeks sinking all of my spare time into Ghost of Yotei.

Para ser honesto, nunca joguei Ghost of Tsushima, então não farei comparações. Mas preciso dizer: Ghost of Yotei é fantástico.

Game is good, but the story is so disappointing Most of the Yotei six are pretty pathetic which I didn't like. The combat also has some issues with forcing you really poorly to use certain weapons into certain enemy types They should've given the player more freedom to pick what weapons they wanted to use for each encounter. Other than that, game is pretty cinematic, plays well Tsushima still clears it

Gameplay is outstanding, and so are visuals and soundtrack. That said, the story is a steaming pile of garbage. The same old revenge story with an annoying protagonist and regularly inserted feminist speech just for the sake of it. Every single man in the story is represented as either a villain or dumb person (like Jubei). Inevitably, men die and women thrive on this game. Nothing against female protagonist, as long as the story is solid — clearly not the case here. Aside from that, Atsu revenge is erratic. She hesitates a lot, picks dumb decisions and is easily influenced by strangers who she just met. Not to mention the fact that she goes out of character several times and picks the dumbest decisions ever. This could be a masterpiece, but ends up being a solid game with terrible writing.
