Fire: Ungh's Quest

CD-Action
Fun and creative game that would work better on tablets. [06/2015, p.62]
It’s not fire, but just a spark. It’s funny and clever at times, but this collection of absurdist sketches is just as close to a good adventure game as a cave painting of an antelope — to an actual animal.

LEVEL (Czech Republic)
Due to its lower difficulty this adventure piece is suitable for casual gamers. During the game you come across a variety of pleasant puzzles and interesting ideas but they are recycled too much in the second half unfortunately. [Issue#252]

A series of little puzzles, point n' click style, with some arcade and quite a bit of pixel hunt. The gameplay isn't particularly satisfying but the cartoon elements are often amusing.

Fire: Ungh’s Quest was something I grabbed as part of a bundle out of curiosity. The game’s graphics seemed alright, and the whole thing was short and supposedly funny, so how could I go wrong? Well, the answer is that this isn’t actually very funny, and the core gameplay is simultaneously simplistic and obtuse. This combines all the worst parts of adventure games with often very lackluster humor, and for all the art that goes into the characters, the animation often feels very low fidelity and “cheap”. The game is about Ungh, who wanders through ten stages of adventure game puzzles in search of fire for his tribe. The game is not terribly long – only about two and a half hours to 100% it – which is a good length for something like this. But the game itself just is rather dull. The problem is that the game does a bunch of wacky referential humor, which doesn’t really land a great deal of the time – it feels a bit lolrandom at time, like they just wanted to stick more silly stuff into the game. And while that’s okay, it isn’t really that funny – a lot of the humor comes from the references (and referential subversions), and while they’re not terrible, they’re not great, either. I didn’t actually laugh out loud once throughout the game, it all felt a bit obvious to me, like the sort of humor that maybe a little kid might find funny. Meanwhile, the puzzles, while not terribly difficult, can be a bit obtuse at times – a few of them require you to go back and forth a great deal, and the solutions aren’t always that logical (like feeding a caterpillar to a butterfly, despite the fact that butterflies aren’t carnivorous). Most of them aren’t that hard to solve, but some will take longer than others; even if you’re not great at puzzles, you’ll still likely be able to muddle your way through simply because there’s just not that many actions to do at any given point in the game. Overall, the game, then, fell rather short for me. Nothing about it really made me want to tell anyone to go play it, or share it with anyone else. It’s just one of those mediocre works that just kind of *is*.

What a game seriously... It's peaceful, easy, have a good graphics kind of funny and good sounds. Everything's perfect for just stop thinking and focusing on one task: FIRE! I really enjoyed FIRE after some long working days..!

It might be short, but it also is very entertaining.

Serious adventure game fans will probably be disappointed with the shallow puzzle design and the game’s short length, but someone looking for a light-hearted romp through a wacky prehistory will find something to like in Fire.

This game is a beautiful game which was created with a lot of love and passion. Little details, funny elements and likeable graphic. I can only recommend this for fierce point and click adventurers who seek a short term adventure which gives you more than you expect!

We enjoyed pretty much everything about this game, but it's very easy and short, so it feels like a cheaper, mobile experience. Still, if you're aware of its flaws, it won't disappoint you.

Fun but easy and short point'n' click adventure. Fire tries to entertain to every member of the family, but forgets the challenge on doing it.

Cheerful and colorful production, made rather for tablet owners than fans of hardcore adventure and logic games on PC.

Fire is a sweet, innocent adventure with a very kid-friendly style, and it hurts me to kick it in the teeth. But I will. Behind those innocent looks lies a very basic adventure, with no story, no dialogue, no characters, no personality, and no satisfaction.

SummaryFIRE, the new adventure by Daedalic Entertainment is set in the cutest Stone Age setting you've ever seen. Ungh, FIRE’s adorably-naive protagonist, was supposed to watch over his tribe’s fireplace during the night. But being a slightly clumsy Neanderthal, Ungh fell asleep and let the fire go out.
