Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake is an incredibly atmospheric and legitimately unsettling experience brought low by clunky, often infuriating combat and trial-and-error stealth sections. As such, it’s difficult to recommend to anyone but existing fans of the series. However, for those who can push through its more irksome elements, there’s a fantastically macabre tale that will haunt you long after the credits roll.

Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake is an interesting example of how modernizing a game can be both a plus and minus. It looks fantastic, it's deeper and more complex, and it offers a lot more to do. At the same time, not all of its changes hit the mark, and some areas that were improved actually detract from the whole. It's still a darn fun game, but it feels like a "sidegrade," rather than an upgrade to the original.

A mostly successful remake that reimagines Fatal Frame 2 for the modern day, and while it can veer a little too much into action territory it’s still an impressively horrifying video game.

I played it and didn't like it it's very bad in many ways and didn't reach the level of the Silent Hill and Resident Evil remakes.

Fatal Frame II was, and is, an all time classic. While this certainly doesn’t “replace” the original masterpiece, it certainly is a tip of the line modern re-imagining. The fact that this is the second time the title has been remade makes it an interesting entry, and while the original PS2/Xbox version will always be a classic, the PS5/XSX version is a perfect modern entry point for new fans, and an absolute gem for long time fans.

This game didn't live up to the original version I didn't like it and didn't enjoy it because of the camera.

Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake is the definitive experience of one of the 2003 horror classics. With enhanced graphics, new mechanics, high replayability, and a story that offers significant weight for players, the title establishes itself as one of the best games in the franchise by far.

Extended runtime or no, Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly’s central horrors haven’t lost their resonance. Trapped in an endless night, these broken spirits convey the hell of history with every miserable cry. They’re hard to look at and even harder to capture on camera, but it’s impossible to get anywhere without viewing this kind of ugliness head-on. People will probably argue about which version of this game is the “best” or “definitive” one for some time. The only reason this remake warrants that question is that it gets across the most salient point: Minakami Village is the kind of nightmare that should never be repeated.

Fatal Frame II Remake adapts a great game, delivering a constant, suffocating sense of dread through darker areas and meticulously crafted ghost designs, while making a natural push to boost replayability.

This is one of the elements that least convinced us, but not the only one. During the adventure, Mio often finds herself in moments that feature trial-and-error mechanics in which she must be careful not to get caught by certain enemies that cannot be defeated. Escaping through the corridors of the houses we pass, studying the patrols of the enemies, moving around in search of hiding places is decidedly frustrating. Especially because – for artistic reasons – the houses are built like labyrinths of corridors full of dead ends and rooms with no exits. While this idea is evocative in exploration, when it comes to chases it simply doesn't work, because it feels like there's only one correct sequence of turns despite dozens of incorrect attempts. The technical component also gave us some headaches: while the visual impact of the environments is excellent – although the same certainly can't be said for the models – on the standard PlayStation 5 the game suffers from slowdowns and unjustifiable and very annoying stuttering. We have no trouble believing that these issues will be resolved in future patches, but it's worth pointing them out.

Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake successfully builds on the original game, adding new mechanics that enhance the gameplay and more. It's just a shame that its inventive camera-based combat can be frustrating at times, and its stealth sections can feel a little trial and error.

Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly, the original, is a classic any survival horror fan would recommend, but it’s also a game that has aged quite a lot. This remake does an impressive job of refreshing its presentation and delivers an unmatched atmosphere that will delight fans of classic Japanese horror cinema. The gameplay, however, remains stuck two decades in the past, and the improvements aren’t enough to make the combat less stiff or more enjoyable, turning every encounter with an evil spirit into an exhausting ordeal.

I’m not trying to yuck anyone’s yum here and realise that there are many Fatal Frame fans who will be as pumped for this remake as I was Resident Evil 2. To those people, I truly hope that you have a blast. To many others, most of whom have just experienced truly desperate and bleak survival horror through Grace Ashcroft in Resident Evil Requiem, I say simply that this ain’t it. You’ll end up far more frustrated than entertained.

As a long time fan of the series I was excited to see this classic remade. The game looks amazing and gives the spine chills that the Fatal Frame series is known for and at first the ghosts were a bit tanky but after the update they have become very manageable and allow for fights to add to the fun hoping they Remake the first game next. Team Ninja has done a fantastic job bringing this classic game to a modern audience.

Game is pretty good, sound design, the combat seems more intricate than ff4remaster or ff5remaster. Visual is really more crisp and detailed. My issues with it stems from the fact that there is no 60fps or performance mode for the ps5. If there is an update in the future i will probably bring the score up a notch.

Remake? More like mistake, I have fond memories of the PS2 game but this stinks. It's not scary, in fact it's pretty corny, and it doesn't play well at all. A major disappointment.

A remake that had content cut out and censored, also it's 2026 and the game is like as if it was made in 2020. Real money waste dump
