Excitebike: World Rally
79
As much as I still hold the classic near and dear to my heart I don't think it quite holds up to today's standards, but this 3D revisit is easily one of the better WiiWare offerings available.
Excitebike: World Rally isn't a revolution for the series; heck, it isn't even an evolution, really. However, over 20 years later, the gameplay holds up incredibly well and fits the WiiWare platform like a glove. The lack of local multiplayer is truly a drag, and for the price, the unlockables don't do much to strengthen the value. That being said, Excitebike has a lot of personality, and it's certainly a game worthy of a new lease on life.
One of the most compelling features of Excitebike: World Rally is the ability to head online and engage in multiplayer races with both friends and random players.

"Anyone who thinks this game isn't an improvement over the original needs to go back and play it after playing this game to see just how much better this is." Had to quote this previous reviewer because this is right on - I went back and played the original after playing Excitebike: World Rally for several hours straight, and WOW: this one ruined the original for me, which I never thought would happen. That's how much better this version is, and how much I love it. My *only* complaint is that they removed the ability to deliberately wreck yourself by leaning too far backwards. Yep, that's all I've got. Buy this game, it's uber retro goodness whether you played the original Excitebike or not

Excitebike: World Rally is better than the original, but it is a little boring nowadays. The game only gives a few generic courses to play and they are way too easy. The Wii Remote held on its side works the best to play this game. There is a really cool track created though that is simple and easy to use. One complaint is that for some reason, there is an online mode but no local multiplayer. By the way, the graphics are terrible and unacceptable but the music is okay, if a little repetitive. Excitebike: World Rally is a decent game and should be played by anyone who enjoyed the original.

A pleasant update to an NES classic, and one that's well worth a download.

Excitebike: World Rally is a tribute of the original game, it inherits the original gameplay and visuals. The game swims in an immensity of the simple with an invaluable funny moments. The online mode is the best reason to get this game. The last reason is because is better than the classical game.

World Rally is an almost perfect tribute to the original Excitebike, but maybe it's just too old for the modern player. Its quick action and the online multiplayer fits well in the WiiWare context, but it's better enjoyed in short sessions.

While this is enjoyable stuff, more should have been done. [Mar 2010, p.73]

Nothing's truly new or captivating here. It feels like a half-hearted cash-in designed to prey on our nostalgia, not unlike Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time Re-Shelled. It's nothing but a curiosity, fun for the few minutes prior to the realization of just how badly Excitebike has aged.
